    This is true. get an off-the-shelf 700P, 5r, VLS ... even an SPS Varmint, dropped in a wood stock. put a 3-9x scope on top. You've got the same thing, performance-wise.

    outstanding deer by my standards. I REALLY like the rifle. what contour is the barrel? my go-to hunting rifle is a .308 with a varmint contour 20" barrel. I could be using something lighter, but heavier is steadier. really like the 18-20" barrels for portability.

    Agree. The same gun that you don't give a second thought carrying to the range, all of a sudden becomes a boat anchor whenever you carry it hunting and try to use it shooting from field positions.

    This could be a pretty simple "build" if you don't get too crazy with the barrel contour. Rem 700 SPS (stainless mo betta) in .270, bed it in a replacement McM stock, tune trigger to 3 lbs. leupold VX3 3.5-10x in Talley LW lows. done.

    you've got a shooter there. I'm consistently pleased with how well my factory 700P shoots. I just load 168's to magazine length (nowhere near touching), go out and shoot.
