    Redding T7

I have one, but load my match ammo on single presses. There is the slop factor in the T-7 and I have not looked to mitigating it. I have no empirical data to support the slop causing run-out, but its a variable I'd rather avoid altogether.

Rifle Scopes Do you remember your first range session with a really nice scope?

I've looked through a lot of higher power scopes and most of them, when you zoom past 20 power, the image tends to degrade. Then I looked through a Schmidt PM II 5-25. The was ZERO drop off in image quality past 20 power. I was blown away.

Rifle or inexperience? How do I tell

Missing from this is the ammo you were using. Was it cheaper FMJ type stuff or Federal Gold Medal Match? Or something in between? If its the cheap stuff, then you are doing great, if its FGM, than there is room for improvement. I don't buy factory ammo much anymore, but when I'm setting up...

    Rookie mistakes

Let me give you some unsolicited advice - you are doing it wrong. Never count clicks - learn to use the turrets correctly. If your dope at 600 is 16.5 MOA and your dial is 15 MOA per rotation - you should be able to see on the hash marks below the dial that what rotation you are on and now to...

    Rookie mistakes

This seems like a good time to chime in with my "sage" rookie advice. Being a rookie means you will not likely place well in any of your early matches - so, if you finish in the bottom third - how can you define success and find something positive? I grade myself in 3 areas: 1) Mental - did I...

    Range Report 308 ammunition question

Pictures would be helpful. You post basically asks "I have different brands of ammo with different markings - what do they mean?" There are hundreds of combos of factory 308 ammo out there and you do not provide enough information for any feedback.

.308 Hard Bolt Lift with hand loads--McMillan TAC 308

Your LC Brass is generally thicker and have less case capacity than factory type, thus, your load of 43.3 grains of Varget may be too hot for this combo. Try the same load in some once fired BH brass you have lying around. If you find different results, that's your answer. Or try the max...

    "Off the lands"

The ogive is the curved part of the bullet and starts at the point where the diameter of the bullet moves below the caliber. in other words, where the sides of the bullet are no longer parallel. A lot of guys (myself included) use the term ogive somewhat lazily. When I say .015 off the...

    "Off the lands"

On my 6.5 rifles, I always load .015" "off the lands" and have never encountered a compelling reason to change that. For my 308 with 175 SMK's - I loaded to 2.8 OAL for starters and never changed. I don't even know how far off the lands this is - because in this case, it doesn't matter...

Can the accuracy of a new barrel improve?

I've had some barrels that are good to go from round 1 and others wait until 200 to settle down.

    Spartan Precision Rifles--thoughts?

Not only is he a great gunsmith, but a damn fine shooter and competitor - so he understands what we are looking for.

How does a bullet go down the barrel and why is ammo rare?

So THAT's what he meant when he said... Not Wizards...but GODS!

Let's talk group sizes at 200 yds

That's a swell group - but see how it groups over the next 100 shots and you'll know more about how good the rifle is and how good of a marksman you are. A single group means nothing, or, only a glimpse of the possibilities. I posted this on another thread: I became a much better shooter...

Advanced Marksmanship Locating Targets with LRF Binos and then Getting Down Behind the Riflescope - Tips?

Once I identify all the targets and sketch out a range card with dope, I run through the target progression with my binos anywhere from 5 to 10 times. For target 1, I try and memorize the field of view as much as I can so I can pick it up quickly when on the clock. For target 2, I already...

How to build good copper equilibrium in a barrel?

I don't ever think about this subject. I clean every 300 to 400 rounds. I don't break in but do clean more often the first 200 rounds. I've gone close to 700 rounds with out problems. I clean with 3 cycles of Wipe Out Foamy cleaner. It seems to work fine and I've never had any drop off...

Stiller TAC-30 action, to Cerakote or not?

Never talk to builder #1 again. Builder #2 is also an idiot. As others have said - the Tac 30, bolt and all, is coated just fine as it is. Or...was this a trick question?

How do you pick the best ammo?

Federal Gold Medal Match is the "industry standard". If your rifle won't shoot that, it may not shoot at all. 168's are fine if you plan on shooting 600 yards and in, 175's if you plan on going farther than that.
