Hand loading for Long range 1: brass case prep

For brass that I've tumbled with stainless media, I find that the edge that the Giraud trimmer puts on the case mouth gets beaten down and dulled a bit - this has the effect of both trimming the length somewhat and of course reducing the amount of chamfer inside the neck. Maybe it's OCD, but for...

    Crimped primer pockets

Interesting response - I wasn't questioning your integrity. I've only swaged 223 on mine but I can see what you're getting at.

    Crimped primer pockets

Is this really true? It didn't seem that way when I set mine up, but maybe I mistook length for differences in web thickness between head stamp makes (or whatever you are indicating the swager indexes off of).

    Crimped primer pockets

Sniper Uncle, does the RCBS swager depend on case length to set swage depth/amount? The Dillon does which is my only beef with it - would have been ideal in my view if it had been designed around a shell holder rather a bit like a primer so it wouldn't need to be adjusted for brass length, could...

    Crimped primer pockets

What, no "buy once, cry once" recommendation for the Dillon 1050 press? If you're loading 223 you'll want to get there anyway someday ;)

    Shooting Mats

It doesn't compress; it folds up (and in a fashion that keeps the underside away from the top so the part you lie on doesn't pick up all the mud, burrs and other sticky garbage from underneath the mat for next time you unfold it).

    Shooting Mats

The thing is, it's only triple the cost but at least five times the mat, at least if comfort, durability and cleanliness are among one's concerns. Well worth it! (if my other messages didn't convey my love for this mat enough already)

Cartridge OAL for Sako TRG 22

Very likely you will be limited. The 175 SMK can get to the lands under mag length in the TRG-22, but Berger 155.5 FBs cannot (and the Scenar is closer in profile to the latter). I don't have any personal experience with the Scenar. I agree with Fuzzball that YMMV depending on throat condition...

    Shooting Mats

There's definitely no curl with the crosstac mat - it really is nice dense foam that holds its shape. The absolute nuts for shooting off a cold concrete deck, rocks, etc. it's also nice and wide - great for shooting straight behind the rifle or canted as in slung prone.

    Shooting Mats

If you really want a mat with significant padding, a mat that won't let sharp gravel poke through, etc. there is only one choice. Okay, there's probably more than one choice, but I would not recommend either the Midway mat or the TAB Gear mat (the latter is really more about being highly...

    Imr 8208 xbr?

Wish I could remember the load, but I got something like 2600 fps out of a 20" TRG barrel with Lapua brass, FGMM LRPs and 8208 with the 175 SMK seated to mag length. Worked fine to 1k. I think I like the Berger 155.5 FB more here, though.

    Case Annealing Question

The proper use of the Tempilaq is high (threshold) temp inside a case neck and low temp halfway down the case body. There is harm to going too far past the upper temp so I've never seen it suggested (but I am suggesting here) that perhaps a third stripe of limit (max) temp inside the neck...

Forster Co Ax the right step for my knowledge/situation?

The Co-Ax is absolutely a great first press. I'm glad my first was a Co-Ax, and yes, you are correct in that it will be very straightforward to learn how to load anything step by step on it before moving to progressive. Good luck in your quest.

Forster Co Ax the right step for my knowledge/situation?

Get both now and practice on your Co-Ax until you've mastered the various steps you'd like - then you'll know exactly how to set up your Dillon well (at least as far as the dies go). Or any other single stage press - you get the idea. You'll want one anyway for precision rifle, even though you...

    Sako shooters

Berger 155.5 Fullbore. Works to 1k with 8208 XBR. No dope to offer on wind bucking. Great bullet and significantly more accurate in my very limited experience than the old standard, 175 SMK.

What to do and eat in tuscon?

The Pima air museum is a must see and it's also worth a trip a few miles south to Green Valley to see the Titan missile museum - descend into a retired missile defense silo and check it out!

GemPro 250 Digital Scale - Awesome!!

Re: GemPro 250 Digital Scale Well, it should be noted that the battery life is very poor (a couple of hours at best). That is a weakness I haven't seen cited regularly in reviews. Range use is dicey if you don't bring lots of spares consequently.
