    Ballistic Coefficient?

Thanks Dabibbee! I'll have to get that book. I've got a lot of reloading manuals. I've never paid much attention to B. C. I'll have to give them another look....

    Ballistic Coefficient?

I thought I'd throw out some more stupid questions. Is the ballistic coeficiant for a bullet listed somewhere? I imagine you can tell just by looking at a bullet. Long, sleek, boat tails, would probably fly the best. In the past I've always looked for that optimum weight bullet, that...

    Ballistic Coefficient?

Could someone explain this to me more fully? I'm beginning to realize that a bullet that shoots flat and accurately out to 100 yards may fail miserably at longer ranges. I've been shooting 140 grain, semi-boat tail in 270. What would fly better at say 700 yards. Pardon my ignorance on all this.

Hunting & Fishing Got drawn for elk! Help me choose a caliber!

Thanks for the info. Bodywerks! I've never shot beyond 500 yds. I'm learning a lot from these forums. A bullet with a better ballistic coefficiant would probably be more accurate at long range. I'm wondering what bullet to try next. Do you have any suggestions? Possibly Berger bullets in a...

Hunting & Fishing Shooting and eating Bear

I assumed all bear meat was awful. When I was still in High School I shot my first bear. I gave it to a lady who had the meat made into salami. That salami was hard to eat. It had a greasy wild taste to it. It was a spring bear and that might explain the poor flavor of it. The last bear...

Hunting & Fishing Got drawn for elk! Help me choose a caliber!

I recently shot a 1/4 inch four shot group, with my 270 (hunting rifle),and Accubond bullets (At 100 yds.) That's my best group ever. They seem to hold together well too. I need to shoot some more game with them, but so far, I'm sold on them....

Hunting & Fishing Got drawn for elk! Help me choose a caliber!

A buddy of mine is an ex-Alaskan bush pilot. He shoots elk with his 338 magnum. That's a lot of gun, and it kicks like a mule. It also does a great job of knocking elk down. I asked him about recoil. He admitted that it does kick a lot, but he doesn't even notice it when he is shooting at...

    243 Win Loads

I think the 243 is a great antelope and deer cartridge, that is underestimated. I've never experienced a problem in over thirty years of hunting medium sized critters with a 243. I used to load 85 grain Nosler Solid Base bullets in it. I think that bullet is no longer made. It really held...

Hunting & Fishing Got drawn for elk! Help me choose a caliber!

You might want to check out royaltine.com. Look under the stories and pictures. There's a thread titled Lerey's Bull. She shot a 7x8 bull at 478 yds. with a .260 Savage. That bull is a real hog. I'll bet it scores close to 400. Royaltine knows a lot about long range shooting. You might...

Hunting & Fishing Got drawn for elk! Help me choose a caliber!

I've shot several elk with a 270 with 130 and 140 grain bullets. I've shot several more with a 30/06 and 150 grain (Nosler Partition) bullets. I think 180 grain would have done better. Elk are tough critters. I broke both shoulders on a big cow once, with a 30/06 and she was still on her...

    Loads for 22-250 Rem

I can't recall what powder charge I use, but it is 4064. I fill a funnel with the right amount of powder. It usually goes right in. If not I tap the brass and funnel lightly on the table. Never lost any powder doing that. This is my most accurate rifle. It likes that powder well. I've...

    A little guidance: Case trimmers

I've been using the little Lee trimmer that fits in an elelctric drill. This is very inexpensive, fast, accurate, and simple to use. I have had zero problems with this. Please tell me if you can see a flaw with this kind of trimming.....So far I love this system.

    What bullets would you buy?

It depends on what you use the bullets for. I had a bullet that was wonderful for accuracy but blew up when you hit bone, and wouldn't penetrate deep enough for hunting. I think I have found a bullet now that is the best of both worlds. It is extremely accurate and holds together for hunting...

    Imr 4064

I've been loading IMR 4064 and IMR 4831 since 1960. I have an RCBS powder measure. It is possible to cut a few grains of powder in two with that powder measure. It is the only one I've used. I have no doubt there are better powder measures out there. I have had IMR 4831 bunch up in the...

    Measuring 100 yards accurately?

The hundred yard tapes sound like a good way to go. I didn't realize they are only $25. for a cheaper one. I hope there isn't too much stretch in it. Thanks for the advice!

    Measuring 100 yards accurately?

I'd like to test my rifle out to see how much it will drop at longer ranges. Pacing off 100 yard increments isn't the most accurate way. I was thinking I could measure off increments of distance with a carpenter's tape, but that might take forever. I don't have a range finder yet. A GPS is...

    Shooting Prone With Glasses

When I was a kid the doctor said my eyes were better than most astronauts. Now that I'm an old fart I have to wear glasses for hunting. I guess I'm still getting used to them. I have to say I don't like wearing them much. One huge problem is that they will fog up in cold weather. Glasses...

    Why clean your brass??

So, I'm wondering what is the best way to clean brass, without spending an arm and a leg. I've seen the tumblers with some kind of media. I've read on here about some kind of stainless media. I've read about washing and drying in an oven. Then I've seen some type of hot solvent cooker and...

Rifle Scopes Measuring deer and elk?

Ranging has come a long ways over the years. I used to do some reading about early sniper operations in Vietnam. For a time many snipers were being issued Remington 700's in 30/06. The 308 came later. A 3x9 Redfield scope was mounted on top. It had a recticle in it that would range an 18...
