    I too have been pricing stuff in the mid range and ive found that its a bit cheaper to find a competent gunsmith and have one built off an old hunting rifle you can get cheap. or Academy sports sells them for $379... my other reason for doing so is that no one makes a varmint contour or heavier...

    30-06 should be all that's needed. you could easily get a 180gr NBT to expand up to 600 yards or more. beyond that, maybe a 185-210 VLD? 30-06 is still number one most common for a reason.

    the biggest issue of the imported m14s seems to be a run of soft bolts. a usgi bolt conversion is pretty common. the forged receivers of the chicoms are actually pretty good for future builds as well.

    As soon as I can get my savage 308 sold, im starting a remington 700 30-06 build. Planning a deep fluted m24 profile in a manners t2. Might go varmint contour and a manners eh1 but not sure.

    I would go with a 30-06. you have a 308 so they would be close unless you get into the 208gr loads. you could then stretch it to 1500 or so... 300WM would be my second choice.

    Ak47 optic and mount advice

    I personally would think an eotech would be a bit taller than I would like. ive been debating trying a 1-4x scope on one but it would require some custom fitting of the mount and such to get it as low as I would like.

    I have been doing a bit more internet searching and all I can find is scope base screws being too long and sticky bolt issues. what I was told to beware of could be a single incident or a story from someone who heard something from someone who knows someone... not really sure.
