Gunsmithing posibably the dumbest machining question to date.

Re: posibably the dumbest machining question to date. Most can manufacturers publish a barrel thread print on their websites & via a .pdf of their manual. If you are going to DIY, practice on a piece of scrap until you get the hang of it. Get a set of Pee Dee thread wires and a good 1" mic...

Gunsmithing Duracoat in the chamber? (long)

Re: Duracoat in the chamber? (long) I'd be very concerned with that approach, my experience with Duracoat is that it can be removed with a strong solvent like MEK. I'd patch it out and use a chamber mop first before I'd submit to bore lapping. JMHO

    Gunsmithing air brush recomendations

Re: air brush recomendations Two issues with the 350, the knurled knob has a tendency to loosen and fall off. A little Loctite is a good idea. The fluid cap i.e. nozzle needs to be well cleaned esp. around the threads before stowing. MEK is harsh on rubber & nitrile, just keep that in mind...

Gunsmithing OT-- fixing galled threads with a checkering tool

Re: OT-- fixing galled threads with a checkering tool Just for general information, they make a "thread file" for metric & US threads. 8 different sizes per "file" Not something you'd use for gunsmithing but they should be standard issue in every mechanics tool box. Inexpensive too...

Gunsmithing looking to barrow some ar 15 stuff.

Re: looking to barrow some ar 15 stuff. An alternative is to clamp the barrel instead, that way you're not putting stress on the receiver. ETA, I generally use a Field gage to verify headspace on new assemblies. Mind you, you need to remove the ejector and extractor from the bolt. Brownells...

Gunsmithing Any air compressor experts around?

Re: Any air compressor experts around? If you decide to go at it yourself instead of letting some hack make a half ass fix, get the compressor numbers off the pump, a quick google search should yield a parts supplier. Unbolt the head, check the gaskets, there will be 2-3 depending on the...

Gunsmithing parking raw chrome moly action

Re: parking raw chrome moly action I only use Molyresin, can't say for the other coatings. My personal preference is to Parkerize CroMo before coating. The only reason is it gives an added layer of protection with areas that get scuffed or abraded & helps hide some of wear. Some coating mfrs...

Re: Curing Ceracoat or Gunkoat in a gas grill? I know of one person that used a gas grill to cure Molyresin and was successful. Personally, I would never recommend it, too many reasons. A home electric oven is fine, just monitor the temp with a probe and let it stabilize. Or use the hot...

    Gunsmithing 6.5mm Super L/R S Pilots

Re: 6.5mm Super L/R S Pilots If I'm not mistaken, PTG would go .2558 on the bushing. It's best to call them though. .2560 would be the land to land distance and .2640 the groove to groove distance. Obviously you want the smaller dimension and then add the running clearance for the bushing.

Gunsmithing How to slow a bullet down in a bolt gun?

Re: How to slow a bullet down in a bolt gun? As pointed out you really need to chrony the ammo before going further. I'm guessing you're buying after market subsonic ammo which is right on the edge as opposed to rolling your own. Here's a handy calculator Speed Of Sound that will give you...
