Gunsmithing 223/556 Chamber opinions for bolt gun

I'd get a 1:7.7 twist barrel with a 223REM Match reamer that is throated for the 80 grain SMKs. Your current ammo will run out long before your chamber wears out: so get a chamber that will shoot the "good" bullets the best. The "good stuff" is the 80 grain A-Max or 80 grain Sierra Match...

    Templar V2 Action

+1 I've bought a "few" Defiance actions over the years and their quality is improving quite a bit. Bought 3 Deviant actions a few months back and was very impressed that: 1. The bolt lugs were perfectly lapped with 100% contact on all the actions. Previously, I had to finish lap all my...

Needing advice for my new rifle

I hope you take this the right way, but I'd advise you getting a factory Remington or Savage 308WIN and shooting it a LOT. If you get a custom gun right now, you are going to want to change everything shortly after you start shooting.....been there and done that....a few times. You REALLY...

    Rechamber/Rebarrel help

a 14 twist is unusual for the crowd on this site and won't allow any heavy 6mm bullets to be used. I'd sell it and cut your loses. Factory ammo only? For what purpose? 223REM or 308WIN are probably your best choices for factory ammo as you will have much to choose from. Any other cartridge...

Gunsmithing Durability of hydro dipping a rifle stock?

I had a stock and a rifle multicam dipped and they did a top-rate job: good prep work, base layer and several layers of clear-coat on top. That said, this finish chips more easily than Cerakote. Having samples of Cerakote (air cure), Duracoat, and hydrodripping, my first choice is Cerakote and...

Rifle Scopes Ideas on how to keep aluminum rings tight

aluminum rings work great. Loctite is your friend: purple or blue variety. If you shoot enough and don't use loctite, your stuff will eventually work loose. If you want it to stay put, loctite it. Nuff said.

    Average Inletting Time?

Unfortunately it's all to common among good and bad smiths. Some smiths create a waiting list and call you when you have reached the front of the line. Only then do you send your gear in to them.....I like this method because your gear is not being held hostage and you can take your business...

    Average Inletting Time?

How long did they quote you? If they are way past the promised date, ask them to ship your stuff back and pay for the return shipping. That's the least they can do. Some gunsmiths get to comfortable sitting on your stuff and it's a good wake up call when the customer says, "i've had enough...

Rem 700 Varmint .223, is this what I should expect for accuracy?

Nice shooting! Looks like you have a good rifle and know how to use it. A 1:9 twist should be good for up to 70 grain or so bullets.

Gunsmithing Needing AIAW and AIAX barrel specs

AI seems to make it a big secret what the barrel tenon is.....guess they sell more pre-fitted barrels that way. I have exact numbers, but the AW tenon was M27x2.0 roughly 1.5" in length. The thread fits was extremely loose compared to conventional actions and uses no lubrication whatsoever...

    Defiance Deviant/Templar 2 Question

Standard Remington with bolt release cut out and bolt handle cut out if you decide to get a straight bolt handle. Defiance also has the option of a swept back Remington bolt handle which requires no modification of the stock.

    Small base sized brass problem

I've had mixed luck using brass from one rifle and trying to use it in another. even after using a SB base die, I could not get old brass to fit a new chamber....had to start with fresh brass. Most of the time, though, it works.

Case split in half, bad brass?

I'd load some more up and shoot it. Check the cases very carefully after you size them: look for the tell-tale prominent rings indicating imminent case head separation. If if looks ok, then I'd shoot them. If you get another separation, then you need to source the problem: your brass, your...

    Type S Bushing Die on a 550B

well, the first thing you can do to test your theory is remove the expander ball and see if that reduces runout. Redding makes good dies, but I don't know if that will improve your problem. For example, what if the press is holding the die crooked....new die won't fix that. I use a 550B with...

Compare BC values between .223 and .308

My experience is that the 223REM competes as an equal to the 308WIN out to 800 yards or so. This is with a 30" barrel shooting 80 gr A-Maxes at close to 3000fps. At 1K my 223REM falls apart and the 308WIN does notifceably better. 800 yards and in though: the 223REM is awesome. However, a...

    208 A-Max

So, all the bullets were between 207.5 and 207.7? That is fantastic. Question, do you have a certified check weight to properly calibrate your scale? Without a lab certified check weight, you have no idea whether the numbers your scale is spitting out are close to reality. No disrespect...

Light Recoil Bolt Rifle for the Wife

243WIN because: -bullet weight primarily impacts recoil and the 6mm bullets will have less recoil than 6.5, 7 or higher. -you should be able to buy hunting ammo at Walmart in an emergency....no wildcats. Chit happens and who wants to be finished with a hunt because they lost their ammo and...

Eliseo Tube Gun Action - Pierce or Defiance? Need advice.

Borden and Defiance make great tubegun actions. Nice thing about Borden is he is very particular about timing the trigger to the action.

    Die Polishing

That's not going to work. The die is hardened and would need some serious polishing with coarse grit....and that would turn your concentric die into garbage. Just buy a new die....way easier.
