Gunsmithing Torque spec for FTE Brake

Your not compressing it, you are putting the muzzle shank in tension. Does it have an effect? Possibly, I threaded a few barrels for a gent who insisted that I time the brakes to 12:05. He would do the final install with Rocksett at 12:00 and no tension on the shank at all. He swore by it. I...

    Gunsmithing PTR-91 Issues: Help!!

I am not sure if this applies to JLD rifles but check the barrel trunnion carefully for cracks, this is a well documented flaw when US manufacture of the trunnion started. Also check the alignment of the triple frame, it must be true to the barrel and cocking tube. Speaking of cocking tube why...

    Gunsmithing AR15 Headspace

A field gauge is not a good means of checking final head space. It only signifies when head space is so excessive the rifle is unsafe to fire. Close on a go, no close on a no go. Invest in the gauges. I really enjoyed this line in the Yahoo (seems appropriate) : "You could even go cheaper and...

^^^ this would be the correct answer. The FSB is match drilled/reamed to a particular barrel and are not interchangeable. Bob the factory FSB.

    Gunsmithing AR15 Headspace

Yup, dead link. His work should be easy to spot, channellock marks on the barrel nut, broken trigger guard ears, punch marks on the castle nut, hammer tracks on the lower where he missed the nail set driving the bolt catch pin etc. 2 M.O.A? Proud accomplishment to be sure.

Gunsmithing question on mounting barrel in LR 308 upper

I wouldn't use the Tetra if you have a choice. Use a moly based grease or anti seize. I use the Tetra all the time for slides and such but I don't feel it has the extreme pressure qualities you want for a threaded connection. Go to your local auto parts store and get the small packet of anti...

    Gunsmithing Best AR .308 trigger

I have had a few rifles with Bills work brought to me for trigger repairs. 3 rifles would double and two of them just had mush for a pull. I don't fault Bills work and on FAL's and HK Style triggers he does a nice job. I think the issue is the factory components he started with or he just stoned...

Gunsmithing Refinishing small marks on bolt handle.

Yup, granted it will never match perfectly but it should blend it OK. Just dab it on the marks with a Q Tip. That's one of the nice things about the paste, it won't run and ding the existing finish.

Degrease, warm it up a tad (just warm to the touch) and hit it with some Birchwood Casey paste blue, it seems to last better than most cold blues.

Gunsmithing question on mounting barrel in LR 308 upper

Clean and dry all of your parts. Install the barrel and snug the barrel nut lightly, maybe 10 ft/lbs or so. Grab the muzzle and see if you can feel any movement relative to the upper. There should not be any, if there is some then yes you can bed it or Loctite it. I would think the Rocksett is...

    Gunsmithing Whats your dream lathe

Aside from the 1 7/16" spindle bore I would call my Atrump 1340 gearhead ideal for me. Very accurate, repeatable, smooth and quiet. The spindle bore diameter isn't bad, it would just be nice to have a smidge more room in there. A little wider spread on gear range would be nice, lowest speed is...

    Gunsmithing 308 Thread Options

I think the reason you can't find any info is because I don't feel it really matters much. You have a slightly larger diameter in 18mm vs 5/8 (15.8mm) which could be argued as stronger but it is not a strength critical application either. That being said 90% of 308 barrels I do are 5/8x24 with...
