    PTR rifle opinions

Having owned both the real deal and 3 PTR's I feel I can say that they are a great rifle for the money. True some had some issues and I have had 2 customers bring theirs to me for headspace issues. It turned out they were later production rifles with the PTR manufactured trunnions which were...

Gunsmithing AR15 barrel cant/ issues with barrel extension questions

Cant, cant·ed, cant·ing, cants v.tr. 1. To set at an oblique angle; tilt. I am in reference to a leaning ie "canted" front sight base/gas block. If the barrel is not in plane with the receiver I would consider that "skewed". If the front sight base was incorrectly aligned when the taper pins...

Gunsmithing AR15 barrel cant/ issues with barrel extension questions

Canted/leaning front sight base, they will cant to the left when you tighten the barrel nut. The barrel will skew if the receiver ring is not perpindicular to the axis of the reciever. That is pretty easy to see if you back away from the upper/barrel and look at it from the rear.

Gunsmithing AR15 barrel cant/ issues with barrel extension questions

Truing the face of the receiver ring is SOP on a "precision AR". Another thing that can cause a cant is the barrel can rotate so ever slightly when tightening the barrel nut. Just a hair of play of the pin/slot can clock the sight to the left. A touch of your preferred lube to the face of the...

    Gunsmithing Vacuum Pumps

When I did some fiberglass work I just grabbed a used vacuum pump from an appliance repair shop. Think it was from a GE fridge. I think I spent $15:00 on the setup including an aquarium valve to bleed a little air in so the pump wouldn't deadhead. Worked really well for laminating a ski eye in...

Gunsmithing Lathe problem, anyone have a similar issue?

Worn spindle bearing(s). You can't feel .0005 by hand. You may be able to adjust them, not sure on that machine though. When you take the backlash out of the gear train by rotating the chuck it has a jacking effect on the outboard end of the spindle.

Gunsmithing Check out this brand new Remington 700's recoil lug

I was thinking the "Angry Beavers" from Century... Almost as bad is the "Special instructions for Remington 700" from Choate and their Super Sniper stock: "If the barrel is not centered in the barrel channel it will not affect accuracy, however most prefer it centered. Using a brass hammer...

Gunsmithing Remove Blockage from AR15 Gas Tube

Got an old bicycle around? Take the inner cable from a derailluer or brake cable, cut it to length and roto-rooter the tube. Use low drill speed and make sure the rotation of the cable is such to "unwind" the cable. The cable won't damage the tube but it should nibble the chunk of wood ok.

Gunsmithing Remington TriNyte PVD and threading on a XCR

The treatments are only a couple of mils thick and what penetrates the surface of the steel is quite shallow. They will yield to carbide tooling. Not an issue.

    Gunsmithing Threading Barrel for brake

The thing I hate about indicating on the bore itself is needle bounce. Kinda hard to keep it tight with the needle dancing everywhere. I have not noticed a marked repeatability issue with range rods. I will use gage pins frequently as well.

    Gunsmithing 1911 Thumb safety issues

Check plunger spring tension and free movement. Replace it or give the spring a tiny stretch if it is soft, you want the safety to snick crisply in place. Does the plunger bearing surface on the safety have the same dimensions and shape as the old one? How far does the safety travel from full...

    Gunsmithing 1911 Thumb safety issues

Check the height and configuration of the lug and fitting pad relative to the broken one. Hard to explain but if you look on the back of the safety there is a lug that goes through the odd shaped hole on the frame. That is the lug that blocks the hammer/sear. They do require careful fitting and...

Gunsmithing should i loctite the barrel extension and other good knowledge please

^^^^this. Imho you are curing a non existent problem. By using a quality upper and barrel the barrel should be a snug slip fit to light press fit into the receiver ring. I as well have seen no data supporting varying barrel nut torque/accuracy claims. I have Devcon'd a couple of barrels into the...

Gunsmithing Does rechambering/setting back a barrel give it full life again?

One has to consider the condition of the bore and muzzle/crown as well. If you have a nice chamber/throat but the bore has mileage and the crown needs cutting back, what are you gaining? If you are to the point where you are considering such, one might as well hang a new barrel.

    Gunsmithing Upper vice block

Just whittle out your Brownells blocks. Take some blue painters tape and put it on the blocks, close them on the upper and relieve the contact points. The tape will highlight the contact points. Do not use the block that holds the upper by the pin bosses. You can deform the pin bosses on the...
