    First Post! M40A3 revelation!

Pathfinder0311, Semper Fi, Marine! It's good to see another on the forum. Like you, I have decided that fancy "sticks" don't do it for me and shoot a M40A1 clone with an Obermeyer 5R barrel. It shoots better than I can, but easily holds the "X" at 600 when I do my part. It's hard to beat a...

The great 6.5mm vs. .308 Bullet Debate, but with TERMINAL BALLISTICS

NevadaZielMeister, I've killed a lot of game with the .308 and 6mm's. The .308 definitely puts animals down harder. Still, given identical placement I doubt you'll see a lot of difference in total outcome. I still vote for the .308, tho'. Wes

    7mm-08 for hunting

Gents, The largest Blacktail Deer I ever killed felled to a heart shot with a 7/08. Field dressed 167 lbs of prime Oregon critter! While I'm a .308 fan I see little difference in killing power between the 7/08 and the .308. Both are fine cartridge and will do the job if you do yours. I used a...

    Best varmint rifle from factory?

Gents, Take a hard look at the older Winchester Stealth series. I have one in .223 and it consistently shoots 1/2 MOA with 69 grain SMK's. Not bad for a "out of the box" rifle! Wes

    Finished Cerakote'n my son's 700

TXBrass, Very nice rifle. Your son is lucky indeed to have a father that dotes on him and wants to get him into the shooting sports. Congrats! Wes

Remington 700 in 223. What barrel length is enough?

ashih313, I'd think a standard Varmint taper 24" in length would work well. The trick will be to find one with the proper twist rate from the factory. A 1:9" may not stabilize the 77 grain SMK's. Remington uses a 1:9 twist last I checked. You'll want a 1:8" in all probability. Wes

How to carry a heavy rifle

Gents, Somehow saying; "Mkumba, my rifle!" doesn't cut it. The African carry works well and is what I'd recommend when carrying a heavy rifle. Wes

How dangerous is/was this? Bolt not locked all the way

Gents, I had a good friend that had a .50 cal fire not entirely locked up...it de-gloved his hand and forearm up to the elbow. He lost a finger and a half. The skin was grafted back on to most of the area and he has some nasty scars to show for it. He still shoots and loads, tho'. In fairness...

    New .300 Win Mag Build

nostep, Try torqueing the screws to a uniform tension...say about 15 ft lbs and see what that does for you. A call to the manufacturer might be in order and they may be able to help you. I'm not familiar with the stock design so can't really help beyond that...good luck! Wes

    New .300 Win Mag Build

Gents, Got bad news today. The 'smith that chambered the .300 short chambered it and never tested it. Needless to say I'm waiting on a new reamer from Dave Kiff so I can rectify the problem. Wait time for a new reamer is 4-6 weeks. Grrr... Still, I'll have time to finish the stock while I...

brand new M98 action. what to build?

Smcarroll, I have the twin to your action in my safe! Un-built, so far. Sounds like you have the magnums fairly well covered. I'd consider a .404 Jefferies IF the magazine is long enough and the bolt face could be modified. It may not be long enough for the .375 H & H, either. Consider a .375...

    New .300 Win Mag Build

Gents, My "budget" .300 Win Mag gets it's barrel screwed on tomorrow. I'm using an AMTU taper Douglas Premium XX Air Gauge tube on a pre-64 Winch long action. The whole think is going to be bedded into a laminated Winchester Marksman style stock. For now I'm going to put my SWFA SS 10X on it...

I am calling for a Christmas Truce on the Savage-Remington Front lines...

Captain Beach, I agree, although I "don't have a dog in the fight". When a post degenerates to name calling it's time to lock it down or delete it,IMHO. Wes

A long action Rem 700. What Caliber?

rustybroadhead, I'd vote for a 6.5 X 284. I had one built on a Rem 700 LA and it was an incredible shooter! I'm a big fan of the cartridge. Wes

Should be a Christmas to remember for my son!

Gents, I feel cheap. All my grandson is getting is a new Marlin .45/70 Stainless 1895. You're son is one lucky lad, dad! Wes

    5R Rifling

Gents, Back when Boots Obermeyer and I were discussing the 5R and "R" barrels in general he settled on the "5" lands and grooves as it offered excellent bullet support, cleaned easily, and was, in his opinion, the best option for the Russian style rifling. He tested up to 12R, but noted no...

    anybody have a gap m40a1

Gents, I own two GA Precision rifles, a AR-10 and a .338 Lapua. Both are spectacular rifles. My M40A1 is a clone right down to the clip slots, but unless you are using the clip slots for the USMC style mount they are worthless on a rifle and waste your money. Spend wisely and get what you need...

    precision rifles... show em

Gents, Great rifles, all! I'm jealous. All I have is my "old dog" M40A1 clone, but it does the job. Trued Remington 700 action, Badger rings/mounts, Obermeyer 5R barrel, and lots of other goodies in a McMillan HTG stock. The whole rifle has been treated to Robar's proprietary finish...

My first "Sniper" and 100% newbie.

bigjoe, Congrats on your first sniper rifle set up! As noted, 168 or 175 FGMM is a good place to start Use some ball ammo, as well. It's always good to have that dope if forced to shoot crap some day... My first rifle was a Rem 700 VS that I had built into an M40A1 clone. I call it the...

    MRC 1999 Long Action

Walsh, I can't vouch for Montana's production rifles, methods, or quality. My actions are almost ten years old and were re-barreled professionally by Pac-Nor with their super match barrel. With what's been said, I think I'd stay away. Wes
