    primers and powder pessimism

I understand the desperation; however, I tend to be of the Col. Jeff Cooper school of thought. I won't put anything in my rifle from a country where I wouldn't drink the water.

    ## Water Quench or Air Cool Annealed Brass? ##

Ahaa, I figured when I first posted this that I would hear different points of view. That is what I was looking for. I understand that your textbooks state what they do; however, there could be a myriad of variables in play. Since you probably understand the mechanism better than I do, I want to...

    ##Cooling Method for barrels##

I hear you! No, I definately don't want to do that, but I feel comfortable with the relatively low temperature differentials I'm dealing with. I haven't checked, but the starting barrel temp is probably well below 160 degF and even the cool air I am producing is probably in the 40-50 degF...

    ## NOW I'm confused about OAL ##

We are on the same page. I have mentioned before (maybe a different thread) that the bottom line is that it is usually a RELATIVE measurement. Most times you do not need to determine the ACTUAL measurement, you just want to be able to reproduce what works for your rifle. The exception to that...

Sort of a reloading question; Paint for reloading bench?

Me too. My workbench is in my office, so it had to look good as well as be functional. I have a sheet of 3/4" plywood for the top, with furniture grade veneer facing up. I went the poly route as a final finish. Makes it much easier to clean up the inevitable powder spill.

    primers and powder pessimism

The way I understand it, the manufacturers understand this to be the typical "cycle" or "wave", and since there is a lag between a decision to ramp up production and actually selling the stuff, most have made the decision not to ramp up production. They do not want to be stuck with the surplus...

How Does One Tune for Accuracy in an AR?

Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Mega Culpa. I had my head in a dark and stinky place. That'll teach me to try to do precision work after midnight. Kevin, you were right of course. I went the wrong direction and was jamming my bullets, of course they didn't grow in length. When I finally pulled...

    ## NOW I'm confused about OAL ##

Tim, I will try a different way to explain it. The Hornady OAL tool does not measure anything. It is sort of like making a mold of a footprint. It produces a negative of the chamber so that you can get to make your measurements. The problem with the system, or should I say an added variable, is...

How Does One Tune for Accuracy in an AR?

Try the Magpul PRS stock. I shoot prone with it and love it. I do seem to shoot better off a bench though, which doesn't really make sense. Maybe I'm full of it...

How Does One Tune for Accuracy in an AR?

Afraid I have some bad news Kevin. I REALLY REALLY wanted you to be right too. I wanted to Prove you were right. So I went and loaded up a round, .224 77gr SMK, LC11 once fired by me, 25gr Varget. I measured it three times with a caliper and Hornady L-N-L bullet comparitor and anvil. I...

How Does One Tune for Accuracy in an AR?

Thanks Kevin, you just saved me a bunch of time tomorrow. I've been agonizing about where to start a ladder test for seating depth, and as soon as I read your post, I knew without a doubt that you were correct. Why didn't it occur to me before? If I can completely remove a bullet with one to...

    Question regarding measuring headspace

I understand what you are saying; however, in this particular case it would have no effect since the RCBS Precision Mic Cartridge Headspace Tool measures to the entire head unlike a caliper. RCBS Precision Mic Cartridge Headspace Tool | Brownells

    Question regarding measuring headspace

I'm struggling through an OAL issue on a parallel thread. You mention basing a measurement on the shorter of your fireformed cases. If you think about it, the longer case has to be the more correct one because a fireformed case cannot possibly be longer than the chamber of your rifle. With...

    ## NOW I'm confused about OAL ##

That was what I thought before, but there is a potential error built into this method. Like you, I thought I was getting an accurate measurement since it is measuring the difference between where the shoulder hits the chamber and the ogive hits the chamber. That part is correct, but what you may...

    ## NOW I'm confused about OAL ##

Yeah, I guess I have my die set wrong, I just checked and found that I am bumping .005"-.006". Once I fix that, I guess I should be pretty much lined up with the Hornady case and this issue will basically go away. As far as jamming goes, I understand if I had done it correctly. A few weeks...

    ##Cooling Method for barrels##

I'll have to ask them about tube life. I wasn't thinking about that since LaRue claims a 10K barrel life; however, I know that the benchresters usually change barrels every season. I actually wasn't worried about corrosion since it is a stainless barrel, I was more worried about any...

    ##Cooling Method for barrels##

That might work for my practice shooting, or even load development (though somewhat inconvenient, last ladder test I shot 60 shots), but it wouldn't help much with competition. we shoot 20 rounds and then have about 10 minutes before repeating twice more. In Houston, ambient temp. can easily...

    ## NOW I'm confused about OAL ##

As I continue to think about this, two more thoughts occurred to me. One situation where the ACTUAL measurement is important is the condition where I think I am near or at the lands, but might actually be jamming any at all and could cause an overpressure situation. Then, deciding to do the...

    ## NOW I'm confused about OAL ##

I thought I had a good handle on OAL. I thought I was doing all the right things. NOPE! What I have been doing until now is pulling out my handy-dandy Hornady OAL gauge (straight one so far) Using one of the bullets I'm about to load, I make three measurements, lightly tapping the end of the...
