Barrel length for 260 or 6.5x47 Lapua

I hate giving up velocity I'd of otherwise had - up to the point where the rifle is "unwieldy". For me, 28" + brake is over the line. Rifle no longer fits in most cases, bags or car trunks. "Medium" contour barrels (RemVar or Palma) is pretty spindly and whippy. So, a 26" + brake is what I run...

Remington 700 with short magnum bolt face question

You'd be looking at a new bolt to run 260. If your existing action was a .473", would you have bought a new bolt anyway? Do you intend to work a Remington bolt over with new knob/extractor? If you answered "no" to the above, then just sell what you've got and start anew with a correct action.

    Subaru owners on the hide?

This is true...the naturally aspirated EJ25s are bad on head gaskets. To honestly fix the problem you need to have the block and heads decked by a Rottler machine to a mirror-like finish, use MLS-gaskets and ARP bolts or studs. Of course, the subie dealer doesn't do any of this. They just slap...

Petition to Remington - Produce 260 Brass

Where does a fellow go to buy Win 7mm08 brass?

    Loads for 7-08.

As much as I'd like to puck up a few boxes of 7mm 175s, I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice not trying them in your 1:9 barrel. I bet it'll work. They shoot great in my 1:9 284win @ 2775fps. The 7mm08 has a 1:8.5 pipe on it. Given the choice, that's what I prefer for medium-power 7mm...

    Loads for 7-08.

I long range "plink" with 7mm08 to keep wear off my 6mm match rifle. I like the 175smk over ~41gr of Varget in Winchester or RP brass, for a nice moderate ~2700fps. Thicker brass like 308 Lapua or FC ought to be backed off to ~40.5gr for ~2660-2670fps. Both loads can be safely pushed faster...

Gunsmithing Sniper's Hide visits Bartlein Barrels Part One: Barrel Break In

I'd certainly like to see this tested, but my premonition is the advantage wouldn't be nearly as drastic as you suggest. Also, I wouldn't think it ideal to stop the gaining of rate of twist. I think the idea is to keep the bullet driven up against just one side of each land...no "coasting"...

Gunsmithing Sniper's Hide visits Bartlein Barrels Part One: Barrel Break In

Frank, I think that fellow was referring to chamber reaming. Some chamber reamers and many throating reamers have spiraled flutes - probably with intent to cut on RH twist barrels. Have an opinion? In my not-so-experienced layman's opinion, I'd think the rate of twist of rifling is so...

    HellCat !!!

I did quite a lot of dyno testing on the LS9 and LSA back in 2007-2008; those are very robust engines. I appreciate many OEM powertrain packages leave "a lot of potential on the table", however, it simply is NOT fair to draw comparisons between "tuned" powertrains and strictly OEM...unless...

    Subaru owners on the hide?

My Legacy with EJ22 has 1/4 million miles and is going strong. Everything works, A/C, cruise, power mirrors etc etc. All its needed aside from routine wear items (brakes, tires, clutch, etc etc) was a rear wheel bearing. Great cars. If you're an engine guy, you can DIY recalibrate your ECU for...

    Rifle Scopes Cleaning???

I know you know better, but for the benefit of those who may not: Sustained use of canned air results in super cold air coming out. Short quick blasts, and pauses to warm the can back up don't. To avoid extra risk of cracking lenses, avoid sustained (cold) use of canned air.

    Rifle Scopes Cleaning???

    1. Avoid cleaning optics in the first place 2. Quick blasts of canned air 3. LIGHT brushing with lens pen brush 4. More canned air 5. Slosh Zeiss lens solvent around and dump out. Repeat. 6. Qtips to soak up solvent and remove water spots. Discard qtip after a single swipe. 7. Lens pen for...

    Help getting setup for reloading`

You MUST get a tool to measure case "headspace". The Hornady comparator works well. You can get extra inserts to measure cartridge length to the ogive. I'd skip Mitutoyo calipers. They're really nice and all, but a $10 dial caliper from harbor freight is more than adequate. Truly. Sinclair...

    Bearing Surface to Twist Rate

Not very directly, no. Low drag long range rifle bullets tend to have a long skinny nose, which places the center of mass somewhere towards the back of the bullet, meanwhile the center of pressure is somewhere up by the nose. The distance between these two points creates a "moment arm" that...

Boots, cowboy ones to be more specific.

I'm a big fan of Boulet boots. They are one of the few brands that makes a high-quality handmade boot with rubber (Vibram) sole. I've had leather sole boots but I just wear them out way too fast wearing them on a day to day basis. My dress boots are the pointy "J" toe Boulet with leather sole...
