Never Go Digital!

Re: Never Go Digital! RCBS check weights are very helpful for providing an objective and consistent reference point in weights comparable to common loads, such as 43.5 grains, as just an example. Checking with these, my Chargemaster was spot on and my beam scales were off...

Hunting & Fishing Feral Hog Hunting

Re: Feral Hog Hunting 308 is way more than adequate. As with all hunting, shot placement is most important. I use 175 SMK's and they work quite well with this placement. For pigs, put them at the base of the ear and they will fall over DRT, and not ruin any meat either. The ribs with...

Hunting & Fishing Odd Hunting Experiences

Re: Odd Hunting Experiences This is a cull from last year that had a broadhead stuck in his low chest. The ranch I hunt on does not allow bow hunting, so he had to have come from a neighboring ranch which would have been several miles away at a minimum. The broadhead was covered over in...

Hunting & Fishing Whitetails & Mule Deer

Re: Whitetails & Mule Deer Just found this in my photo files. Here is a nice deer taken by one of my lifelong best friends on a trip together to Saskatchewan. This was his first buck ever. After five...

Hunting & Fishing Whitetails & Mule Deer

Re: Whitetails & Mule Deer Thank you Steve. By my measurements, the first four are in the upper 140's. The last one was a post-mature deer, at least 8 1/2, perhaps even older, who did not measure big, but had lots of mass. As to how we hunt, here is an overview. Because of the management...

Hunting & Fishing Whitetails & Mule Deer

Re: Whitetails & Mule Deer Here are a couple of deer from last year that are on my hopeful list for this year. Last year was our worst drought in recorded history. This year should be better as the drought has eased quite a bit. Some other nice ones from prior years.

Hunting & Fishing Hornady match hpbt on game?

Re: Hornady match hpbt on game? Shot placement is the key to success. Here is the 168 Amax with my wife shooting her 308 on a cull deer. ( I usually use the 175 SMK, but these work equally well.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDlv2ODrVk8

Sidearms & Scatterguns CCW on campus.

Re: CCW on campus. For the Texas students, Texas law prohibits carrying on campus. A 30.06 sign is not necessary. It is a third degree felony. Learn and follow the law. See Texas Penal Code 46.03 at page 36 of this link: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/internetforms/forms/chl-16.pdf

Sidearms & Scatterguns Gun grease or oil ?

Re: Gun grease or oil ? Lucas Red 'N Tacky #2 grease works well on my 1911's and bolt rifles. It really adheres extremely well, is very slick, and includes a rust inhibitor. Should be available at most auto parts stores. $6 for a huge tube, which will last many lifetimes, share it with...

Sidearms & Scatterguns Carry Ammo double check

Re: Carry Ammo Safety Lesson My point is whatever ammo is chosen, check it visually and cycle it through as a double check. My note has nothing to do with any particular brand. Hornady and Winchester both make excellent quality ammo. Five minutes of quality control and preparation can...

Sidearms & Scatterguns Carry Ammo double check

This past week I was helping four people practice for their concealed carry test which was today. All were using factory ammo. There were two defective rounds in the course of the day. One was Winchester 9mm 115 gr FMJ, which had the bullet crushing the lip of the case causing significant...

    Sidearms & Scatterguns 1911 Reliability?

Re: 1911 Reliability? An interesting thought from Larry Vickers from a link on another thread - "Don’t expect a pistol to shoot like a custom 1911 but be as forgiving about maintenance as a Glock 17; it just doesn’t happen that way." http://vickerstactical.com/tactical-tips/accuracy/

Sidearms & Scatterguns 1911 holster recomendations?

Re: 1911 holster recomendations? Crossbreed in horsehide. Add anti-skid tape to the outside of the kydex. It is adjustable for height and cant. The large back makes it very comfortable and stable. Also, it is thinner than some of the others suggested here, which I have tried also.
