Gunsmithing Bolt Lug Contact of High End Customs: Surprising Results

I assume you had the firing pin in the bolt when you cycled it and it was cocked when closed. Repeat the test with the firing pin removed. I'm interested to see the results. Also you could cut the case in half and put a spring in it (making it longer) to provide some "bolt thrust."

Overall case length per bullet manufacturer

Follow Layton's link. The links method (bullet tip to bolt face) will give more consistent oal than what you are doing (bullet base to case base). I think it's because of case head space variation and they way they drop into the chamber when you measure. All of it's adds up to chasing a couple...

    Gunsmithing help please!!!!!

What kind of bottom metal are you running? Everyone thinks 55 or 60 inch/pounds is the holy grail of torque settings. It frequently is, for a properly bedded stiff custom DBM or a steel floor plate. But for factory aluminum Remington bottom metal 25-35 is plenty. 55 or more has cracked plenty of...

Rifle Scopes Little to no elevation after zero

It sounds like more a gun issue than scope. The Remington tolerance stack (barrel thread and shoulder, receiver threads and face, etc.) have got the barrel pointed down and you've used most of your up elevation getting to zero even with the moa base. If you can put your rifle in a secure rest...

Gunsmithing Rem 700-Bolt will not open after firing! I'm confused!

74 - You need some factory ammo. 260 is tough to get cheap. Bite the $30 bullet and get a box of factory anything (if you can find it!). Brass is cheap compared to reloading problems. Try to keep all brass in one gun (unless you're blasting with your FAL). Primary extraction as pointed out...

Gunsmithing Possible to modify existing action to take AIAW Magazines?

Like bward said, the amount of work involved ends up being enough to cover the cost of selling your action and upgrading to an AW cut custom.

Anyone make bottom metal for Rem. 700 that takes AR mags

Basically, No. You have to modify a lot of things to get the round high enough to be picked-up by the bolt. Save yourself a lot of time, headaches and money. Get a PT&G DBM and some AI .223 mags. The magazines may seem expensive but they're not at all in the big picture. The allure of having...

Gunsmithing early model remington 700 trigger late 60s

This is an old style Rem 700 trigger and it sounds like the safety arm is bent. The bend happens frequently because of the long flat section of this arm. As a note this is the trigger that has caused so many controversies with Remington triggers being 'unsafe'. The bolt is locked when the...

Gunsmithing If you have a lathe that has a chuck that threads onto the spindle please help!

Don't lock the gears and then pull against them. You'll crack some teeth off. It's happened many times. Sooner or later you'll break them if your knocking chucks off. Start by putting some Kroil or other penetrating oil as close to the threads as you can get. Close the jaws most of the way and...

Such thing as a rifle that just will not shoot ?

Truth, Your groups don't really look all that bad. An un bedded factory Rem 700 heavy is about a 1.5 moa gun. That means some groups will get close to an inch. Some closer to 2. If you bed it, adjust the trigger, properly mount the scope and check the crown it should drop to just under moa...

Gunsmithing Contact GAP? Yes, No, Suggestions

Clearance, Clairance. You could take the stop out and polish the sides on a flat of sandpaper, just to assure there is not a burr hanging off anything. Then take an x-acto knife or razor blade and carve a sliver off the skin where it sits over the stop. Give it some breathing room. For...

    Remington 700 SPS .223 68gr hpbt problem

Every gun is going to have it's own quirks. I have 2 SPS .223 20" guns in Hogue over-molded pillar stocks. One of them will shoot sub 1/2 moa with 69 gr Mk's. The other shoots them into about 2 1/2". Switch scopes, same results. (I'm not that good a shot. 1/2 moa is about as well as I can...

Gunsmithing Question on ptg bottom metal a5 style

The aluminum bedding block has to be milled down until it is the same thickness as the pillar height at the action screws, and so the bottom follows the contour of the top of the M-5 DBM. It's not easy. The best way, as previously mentioned, is to have it milled, gunsmith/machinist required...

    Trigger replacement options

How low are you going to go? 3.5# and above it's possible to make a Rem feel as good as the others. Below that you're pushing it. When you get close to a pound the jewel runs away from the pack. I stay above 3 and shoot my Remingtons as well as my Timneys or Jewell.
