    5R Rifling

Sounds about right. They are said to clean easier, as the brush/patch doesn't need to get into a the tiny 90° corner that exists in a conventionally rifled bore where the land meets the groove. I've never known the difference. I've also heard 5R is a bit gentler on bullet jackets, because...

Gunsmithing Who is GOOD working with/on Jewell Triggers?

I called them today, they had no advice for me other than to send it in. I'll follow up when it's fixed, if they tell me what the problem is.

7mm-08 Rem 700 build is complete (photo heavy)

Congrats! I loves me a 708 for "all purpose" badassery. Keep your eyes peeled for: H4350, 162amax and 162 hornady bthp match. Those will take you to 1000 real nice.

    Fitting Barrels to M2013

Mark at SAC has these down to frickin science, on account of him being a great riflesmith to begin with, plus he's done a lot of these lately. He built mine recently, and its first time out past 200 yards shot a 1.25" 5-shot group at 600. Not to say any of the other smiths mentioned...

Anyone else had a HUGE MV drop w/ H4350

Excellent info here, but let me say this: The 20+ year old unopened cans of IMR4064 and IMR4831 I bought this summer performs *right there* with ~1 year old stuff I've got. A friend gave me a 1/2 can of Hercules Reloder 15 at least 20 years old. I had it in my basement sitting alongside a...

Gunsmithing Who is GOOD working with/on Jewell Triggers?

Appreciate the idea, unfortunately I don't think there's anything wrong with that part; I inspected it closely. Any other ideas out there?

Gunsmithing DLC or TiN coating on barrel's I.D.?

You could, but I don't know why you would. The melonite finish looks nice and has great corrosion resistance. Ion Bond is expensive. Doesn't seem like a great idea to invest so much money on a consumable item like a barrel.

New build...7mm LRM or 7-338 Norma?

1:9 is plenty, 1:9.5 will be ok. Not too long.

New build...7mm LRM or 7-338 Norma?

Sharp Shooter I believe Tom Sarver's cartridges are called "Hulk" and "ThunderHulk". Anyway, his wildcats are well designed and perform nicely. They're also highly overbore, but he does a ton of fiddling around with different ideas and designs. I know I'd certainly choose the 7mm-338NM...

Gunsmithing Who is GOOD working with/on Jewell Triggers?

So, I bought a rifle with a Jewell trigger. It was set very, very light (6-8oz). Before taking the rifle out, I feel I thoroughly function tested it, and it passed. Action, FWIW, is a Badger M2008. Aside from it binding up and not releasing while I was out shooting in the rain at the Grind...

Gunsmithing DLC or TiN coating on barrel's I.D.?

Since we're off if the weeds talking about seasoning stuff: To start a high performance engine build, I'll take a 200k mile, 40 year old engine block that's been overheated a dozen times over a new-in-the-crate block any day...assuming I'll be fully machining it, of course.

    Help please! Inconsistent headspacing

    1. Not really. I've found ~.002" to work really well. The bullet pushes snugly but smoothly into the neck, and they don't get set back or jump forward under recoil. If you wanted custom neck tension, you could buy the "expander mandrels" (.308" for 30cal vs. .306" for the "neck turning...

    Help please! Inconsistent headspacing

You are describing my process. In a Dillon 650, I use a Lee universal decapping die, then either an FLS die with decapping stem/expander ball removed (or a bushing die with a busing ~.010" UNDERSIZED), and finally, a sinclair expander mandrel with a "neckturning mandrel". My rationale: 1...

    Dillon 550-650 upgrades

Contact info, please. I load all my precision ammo on my 650, and I am not using any trick aftermarket parts or toolheads, yet I maintain concentricity of .002" MAX. Most all of the cartridges measure .001" or less. I see no reason to spend the money on the aftermarket parts.

    7mm barrel choices-

I think standard Kriegers are 4 groove. Best advice I can give is choose whatever "groove count" barrel you can get your hands on SOONEST. It makes very little difference. Allegedly, 5R barrels clean easier, but every 4, 5 and 6 groove barrel I've had has been plenty easy to clean. Velocity...
