    Target interpretation help.

The brass volume issue in 308 was primarily created when Winchester was chosen to manufacture the ammunition for Palma competition years ago. They went with what is termed a ballon head to increase the capacity of the case. In terms of capacity it added about 2 to 3 gn of water capacity over...

    Target interpretation help.

You are getting lost in the weeds here. This is a 308 and it's pretty simple to load for. I have the same rifle although mine is in a B&C Light Tactical stock. The load I gave you is a known load and it works in almost all rifles. As for seating depth you know that the lands are probably a...

First off, can the Magnetospeed and attachment as they may be a source of the problem. You say 20" SPS but I'm not aware of any 20" barrels other than the Tactical model. What is the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle? I'm also curious to the vintage of the rifle. What are the first three...

    cleaning lube off cases

One Shot is a dry lube and can be removed with a dry rag. I usually do this as I pull the round from the press. I don't worry about the neck as I run a brush through that before loading. Otherwise 10 minutes in the lizard litter.

    Target interpretation help.

Having seen two sets of targets I am going to say that something is wrong here. There seems to be some consistency in point of impacts but there is more scatter in the shots than I believe can be explained by either charge or seating depth. Several things come to mind. I am assuming this is...

    Target interpretation help.

Assuming you are using OCW then the 44.5 to 45.1 gn has a pretty consistent point of impact. Would test again in that range with a smaller increment. of 0.2gn. There should be a lower"node" about 1.2 gn below this which would be around 43.2 to 43.9 gn. 43.2 is in the range of a known load...

    Question on components per application

Since @straightshooter1 brought up weight sorting and there is a lot of recommendations and advice about not weight sorting I through this in. If you ar looking a real precision reloading for bench rest or F Class it isn't the most accurate way to sort. BUT when faced with trying to take a...

AR10 using 178gr Horniday ELD-M Bullets Powder Suggestions

Let's get this up front a little late in the process. The 308 chamber is not likely to be friendly to any ELD-M bullet, especially when limited to magazine length. It can happen but that bullet is a secant ogive bullet and the chambering is designed around a tangent ogive bullet. That is why...

    18" 6.5 PRC and 135 A tips

Shorter barrels will get the benefit of slower powders just like the longer barrels but with more unburnt powder and muzzle flash. Shorter barrels do benefit from lighter bullets and faster powder in terms of burnout and less muzzle flash. Things to keep in mind: You can't make up the...

.380 win small rifle primers discussion and questions.

Unless you are shooting a near max load on a hot day you will probably not see any significant velocity/pressure effect. Remember that about the largest design SRP case is designed for about 30gn of powder and you are looking at 40-50 gn in a 308.

    ES of 97?

Ouch, read right over that this morning! The 200yd makes some difference more on the order of 0.3 MOA for 100 fps!. Anyway, I don't have the the latest Hornady manual with the ELD's but I'm betting their velocity is in a 24" barrel. So if it's 3000 fps then you're about on the max. Back when...

    ES of 97?

Shooting at 100 yds you can have a 100 fps velocity variation and the POI effect is about 1 caliber so it's hard to discern in a 1/2 MOA rifle. As for the change if any its likely due to ambient temperature or possibly charge weight. However, without knowing your charge weight we are pretty...

New virgin brass vs new factory ammo vs 1x fired brass

The 308 FGMM that you mention is a very well known round and is the standard for testing a rifle chambered in that cartridge. It is accurate because care is taken in selection of bullet (SMK) and in selection of cases and powder. I have some of the IMR 4064 flavor and it has uniform datum...

    6.5CM Development guidance

I'll throw in something on the seating depth. Remington is famous for long throating their 308 caliber rifles, in particular the 308 Winchester. If I were to try and jamb a 168 SMK in that rifle only the boat tail would be in the case. Roy Weatherby set up any number of cartridges and every...

    6.5CM Development guidance

Trying to get consistent seating depth 0.002" off the lands is probably going to be an issue. Things are very sensitive at that point and the velocities are probably going to be inconsistent. You would be better off jamming OR backing off to 0.010". BUT you need to back off on those loads...
