Hunting & Fishing Gradous .260 hands out a few more headaches

This year, GA hunting regulations stipulate that Dec 1-25 is buck only with a firearm and either sex days will resume Dec 26-Jan 15. With my wife and I moving into our first house in two weeks and the fact that she’s 7.5 months pregnant with our first child, there’s a good chance my season may...

Hunting & Fishing My first buck in 20 years

If you've seen any of my past threads here in the Hunting and Fishing section, you've probably noticed I've never posted a picture of a buck. The last buck I killed (other than a couple accidental button heads mistaken for does) was a young basket rack when I was 11 years old. Somewhere...

Range Report Gradous .260 at 960 yds video

Five shots at 960 yards using 130 gr HVLDs. The mirage was pretty thick and wind was quartering from ~1:30 @ ~5 mph. After the 1st shot, I took .3 mils out of my elevation = 7.1 mrad, held right edge of the plate and let 4 more go. CTC spread on those 4 shots was 4.5". <object width="425"...

Hunting & Fishing Breaking in the Gradous .260

Archery season curbed the craving somewhat, but I've been chomping at the bit to take the Gradous .260 out in the field and drop the hammer on some whitetails. Fortunately it didn't take long and I got to harvest two does on the opening day of rifle season. The first one was taken at 200 yards...

    Gradous .260 Rem

This thread has been a lonnnnnng time coming. Ever since the first time I set foot in Mr. Gradous' shop, I knew I had to have a rifle built by him. I began accumulating parts over a year ago with the intentions having Robert put this together as a present to myself for finishing grad school...

Rifle Scopes Grip improvement for the Super Sniper

I mentioned this a while back, but it's buried somewhere in the 55 pages of the 5-20x SS group buy thread. Since I just made some new bands for my 5-20x SS and haven't seen anyone else bring this up, I decided to take a couple of pictures and make a thread on the matter. As much as I love...

    Steyr HS .50 Pictures

I was just going through the pictures on my computer and found these from last April. This is quite possibly one of the most beautifully designed guns I've ever seen. I didn't get to pull the trigger on it but got some good action sequences of a few of the folks that did. The shockwave in the...

Help me out with the SWFA photo contest

Fellow 'hiders... my picture of a preying mantis checking out the 3-9 SS was selected as a finalist in the SWFA photo contest. I'd really appreciate it if you'd take a look and cast a vote for my entry. Thank y'all and thanks to SWFA for putting up some amazing prize packages. Lucas O'Meara...

Hunting & Fishing A good finish to a great season

Here's a few pictures from our season-closing hunt last weekend. We've been hunting this piece of property pretty intensively this season to try and get the doe:buck ratio in check. It belongs to a friend's family and has been infrequently hunted over the past 5-10 years, but with little...

Hunting & Fishing Why shoot coyotes?

My dad just forwarded me an email with these pictures of monster buck in Oklahoma being taken down by a couple coyotes. My wife has always questioned my dad and I's stance on coyotes, primarily because she lived in Jackson Hole, WY for a stint and fell in line with the folks that think they're...

Help me identify these marks on the brass

I was just cleaning up some of the brass I shot last week and noticed these marks on some of the cases I body sized before the last firing. This is the first batch of cases I have ever body sized, as I typically just neck size and have never had a problem when chambering, until recently on this...

Hunting & Fishing Putting the 105 gr amax to work (graphic)

Thought I'd share some pictures of the past two weekends of hunting action. These were all shot with a .243 Win and 105 gr amaxes at 100 yards and in. Opening morning, I was getting the crosshairs settled on a nice doe out in the salad, when she was spooked by something on the opposite side...

Range Report Fort Gordon: Range 14

I had the pleasure of shooting out at Fort Gordon's rifle range the other day; marked distances out to 800 yards and a target stand/steel plate (3'x3' I believe) at 960 yards. They have a variety of targets to use, including some small tombstone reactive poppers and covered wood/concrete benches...

Gunsmithing broken retaining pin in firing pin assembly

So last night I was taking my Remington 700's firing pin assembly apart and when I tapped the pin holding the cocking piece and f.p. together, it came out in two pieces. Is this common? I've looked on brownells, but all I see is a bolt stop pin, not this one. Does anyone have any suggestions...

    Gunsmithing Rem 700 Stock Overhaul

With whitetail season coming to a close, I decided it was time to try and overhaul the tupperware stock on my Remington 700 SPS in a few ways. Now, let me preface all this by saying, I'm not expecting Manners or McM results from this project... hell, I'm not even expecting B&C results. I just...

    Primer seating question

I was going to pull this cartridge apart and put a new primer in it as this one is not seated exactly right, but I wanted to see if y'all thought it was necessary. It's not protruding much, but you can see the mark where the firing pin hole is contacting the primer. Would this have presented a...

    Gunsmithing Shilen trigger question

I've got a Shilen trigger in my Rem 700 and occasionally, if I close the bolt with a moderate amount of force, the trigger will get a little creep in it. 99% of the time, it's as crisp as a glass rod. Does this sound like too little sear engagement?

Gunsmithing remington 700 bolt wont open

I just installed a shilen trigger in my bone stock Rem 700 ADL and everything seemed to go smoothly until the bolt seized up after 5 or 6 dry fires. The bolt is now under so much tension, I can't lift the handle. What did I do wrong and what should I do to alleviate the problem?
