    Budget spotting scope

The Athlon Ares Gen 2 15-45x65 is what you seek. Great quality for the price and there’s a 22x mil reticle eyepiece available. IMO it’s by far the best in that price range, and nearly the only one available with a reticle. I looked at all the competition including several priced at a couple...

    Bergara Issue that Frank Mentioned

I wonder about other factory rifles that include a non-lug rail. Ruger American Predator, Howa HCR, Browning, Winchester XPR, Tikka CTR, Mossberg etc. Why does only Bergara get a bad rap for this? Are the other rifles just less popular or common? I don’t have a dog in this race, I really just...

    Bergara Issue that Frank Mentioned

My BMP didn’t come with one, never saw one included with another rifle either but obviously it happened sometimes. They would have been better off not including one IMO. I use a Seekins base and have never had a problem.

    Bergara Issue that Frank Mentioned

Thanks for the reply, I respect your experience a lot. It looks to me like the problem is the smooth bottomed base, and Bergara made a big mistake using it. But… am I missing something here? Is there a problem with the rifle itself that is not related to the base they used? I mean, first of all...

    Mid priced spotting scope choice

OP, if you still find yourself needing a spotter, I’ll second what everyone else says and tell you the Ares 15-45x65 is great for the price.

    Bergara Issue that Frank Mentioned

@THEIS, I do not mean to be argumentative, this is an honest question. I’m asking you because of your well-known expertise in rifle building. Is there something in the metallurgy or manufacturing process of Bergara’s receivers that causes a good lugged base to come loose? Or a non-lugged base...

    Bergara Issue that Frank Mentioned

I’m not defending their shitty rail. The same would happen on any rifle with any rail that doesn’t have a recoil lug.

    Bergara Issue that Frank Mentioned

The Bergara branded bases are probably sourced from EGW or some Chinese supplier. They don’t have a recoil lug, so shame on them for that. Fortunately any 700 base will work… just like any other 700 pattern rifle that doesn’t include a rail.

    Bergara Issue that Frank Mentioned

Yes, they sell bases. How does that negate my point? What I said was they don’t include bases on their rifles.

    Bergara Issue that Frank Mentioned

To my knowledge, Bergara does not include a scope base on any rifle. Their website does not show any rifle with a base. Maybe they provided a shitty one at some point, but they definitely don’t now. I’ve never seen a factory-installed base on one. Either way it was never an issue with the rifle...

    Rifle Scopes I’m considering a Minox ZP5 5-25

When you say bench rest, I assume you just mean shooting from a bench —and not actual Bench Rest competition where it’s more common to use SFP, MOA and higher mag… with that assumption in mind the ZP5 is an outstanding scope. It has a great reputation on here, and everything jda2631 and guthwine...

Rifle Scopes Scope upgrade opinions: NF SHV to NX8 or ATACR, or Vortex Razor...S&B?

For under $2500 it’s really hard to beat a used Minox ZP5. If you’re patient, they show up in the PX in the low 2k range. I don’t think anything else under 2500 comes close.

Rifle Scopes Narrowed it down to these 2. Can you make a case against the Cronos??

Whatever you choose, you should learn to spell a scope’s name the way a manufacturer spells it. It’s Cronus, not Cronos, Chronus, Kronos, Chronos, Cronis, Coronavirus... FFS JUST READ IT AND COPY, WHY IS THIS SO HARD????

If you’re going to quote me, don’t twist my words. I said: I have no authority on this forum, and I don’t really know any other forum members outside of this page. I’m just a random dude who likes to read and comment occasionally. That’s what you call authoritarian groupthink? I was trying to...

Rifle Scopes Ior recon 4-28x50..... reviews? Probs?

Easy with the “communist” talk, buddy. A free exchange of ideas includes negative ones. The Hide is also a bad place to say “Wow you know, gun control sure is a great idea”, does that make it communist? No, it means there is a general consensus in this community that gun control is a shitty...

Rifle Scopes YT video about turret test/abuse

This has already been said, but there are huge numbers of cars and trucks on the road that use leaf springs. This includes heavy duty tractor-trailers that see literally millions of miles without failure. Leaf springs are MADE to bend over and over again, it’s EXACTLY what they were designed to...

First Precision Hunting Rifle - Mauser M18 in 6.5CM or PRC?

I’ve heard several people claim that M18 barrels are pressed-in rather than threaded; this is NOT true. I don’t know the thread pitch or any other details, but barrel threads are plainly visible looking through the forward scope base screw hole.
