Need a new reloading kit! Everything for extreme LRS!

Keep in mind, you WON"T learn how to reload from reading a book. Yes a good manual such as Lyman's 49th will help you get all the critical base knowledge, but experienced trial and error is how you learn the full process. I've been loading for about a year now, and still in a learning curve...

Iv'e tested about 4 different powders in my AR with 69 SMK's and my top performing powder has been Benchmark loaded to approx 23.5 gr. Average velocity from my 24" Varmint barrel 2960 fps.

Your thoughts on stepping up from .308 to .300WM

Yea, that's what I thought in calm hot conditions back in June.... now with the cold dense October air blowing in multiple directions i'm in a completely different game. I'm quickly learning that it's the wind is what sets the novice shooters (me) apart from the experts.. LOL

Your thoughts on stepping up from .308 to .300WM

#1 is Win 748 #2 is Benchmark #3 is 2000MR These are my top powders. Win 748 seems to be my most consistent and best performing powder. Thanks for all the input, after reading i think I will just stick with the tried and true 308 and just keep shooting and practicing holdovers.

Your thoughts on stepping up from .308 to .300WM

No. When I stated "qualified" I meat qualified to be able to shoot at my club's 600 yard range. I don't shoot competitions.

Your thoughts on stepping up from .308 to .300WM

I've done a lot of load developement, and my 1-12 R700 doesn't shoot 175's well. I only did a small amount of testing with 180's and did not seem to group well either, so I kinda gave up on the heavies. Maybe before I comit to a new caliber, maybe do some more testing with the 180's and load a...

Your thoughts on stepping up from .308 to .300WM

Another reason I was leaning towards .300WM was also the relative ammo/brass availability which even throughout the recent ammo shortage was always plentifull..

Your thoughts on stepping up from .308 to .300WM

So, i'm looking for some opinions. I'm currently shooting precision .308 out to 600 yds. The current colder dense wind seems to now be a frustrating factor in my precision. When I qualified for my clubs 600 back in June it was a very light breeze and 82F , and I shot excellent. Now jump to...

    155 or 185 for 308 to 1k

This looks like a game of "Battleship" gone horribly wrong... ;)

How many rounds through a chronograph for best results?

Typically when i'm testing loads, i'll shoot groups of 4, then shoot another rifle allowing a for a barrel cool down. I usually load about 16 rounds per recipie for a complete "test" I then simple average all the velocities and shot groups and log my data into my Excel spreadsheet. I've tested...

    155 or 185 for 308 to 1k

I've shot 155's out to 600, and the deciding factor is the wind on that day. No wind or light wind is not a problem, however cross wind of say >6 mph will start to push a 155 off substantially. I'm noticing this even more of a factor now that the air is getting colder (colder more dense air wind...

    Help with powder option?

Do yourself a favor and find some different loads using different powders. During the past few years powder was extremly scarce. Varget and R15 were never in stock. Reason being it's everyone's internet pet powders. Yes they work awesome, but when the powder scare sets in, these are the first...

    .308 reloads

I shoot about 5 different weights and brands of .308 bullet. I did some testing and did not notice any substantial accuracy gains with varied COAL's. I got tired of constanty playing around with "jump / no jump / kiss" and so on. I now load everything to approx 2.81" and call it done. I had some...

Question for the experts, compensating a load for colder fall temps

So back in june I was shooting 168 smk's with 41.9 gr of W748. I was measuring an average of 2560 fps and at the time the temps were about 80F. I would like to know is there any general math to compensate for the cooler 65F temps that I have currently with respect to altering the powder charge ...

I had this really recognizable tiger striped gun stolen. Can you watch for it?

It's great to read a story like this that for once the good natured victim comes out on top. So many similar situations where stolen items vanish never to be recovered. It's a common scenario out in my neck of the woods with dirt bikes. It's a group of fairly smart crack head kids in their 20's...

Inexpensive stock options similar to Manners T2

I like my B&C Tatical Medalist 5 , can't beat the value I payed about $445 shipped. No they are not the best, but they are an excellent fitting mid range chassis. I had to do some free float sanding to get mine perfect, and I had to open up the bolt relief slot to allow my bolt to completely...

55gr vmax with imr4198 and 1:7 twist please help

I about guarantee you will have cycling issues with 4198 in an AR. I tried 4198 in my Bushmaster 24" Varmint and had consistiant FTF's. Like others commented 4198 is too fast of a burn which prohibits the piston from fully cycling. I have been using Win 748 ,and Benchmark with excellent results...

    Short stroking semi auto .308

I can't offer .308 experience, but in my Bushmaster .223 AR I had the same exact issue when I loaded a batch of 55's using 4198. I loaded anywhere from 19.5 up to 21.5 gr of powder and the velocities were around 2800-3075 . I was consistiantly getting failure to feed stovepipe jams. My reloading...

    Alliant 2000MR

It was strange that I started working 2000MR back 8 months ago during the height of the powder scare as it seemed to be consistiantly available at my LGS's. Now jump to presant day, powder is ar more plentifull, but I don't see any more 2000MR ? I purchase about 11# several months ago, and had...

Winchester primers vs. CCI-200 primers as indicator of pressure in 308/7.62

I have settled on a great .308 "compramise" recipie node that is proving to be a consistiant very accurate load. Im loading 168 smk's / 41.7 gr of w748 powder. I use LC brass. The are averaging 2560 fps which is a respectively mild load. Im shooting for extended barrel life not blistering high...
