My first reloading attempt was a failure, what now?

We've all done it in one way or another. Over charged vs. undercharged vs. not charged. Small rifle primers instead of small pistol primers (1/3 didn't go bang! I fed them through again and the all went bang!) Forgetting the primers, these don't go bang! at all. Incorrect (long) case trim length...

What kinds of scopes did you use as a kid?

Herters 3-9x on a Remington M600 in 6mm Remington. I ran that scope for 48 years.

Accessories WtB Yeti cooler or similar

Coolers are like socks, I change them regularly! On America's Test Kitchen they tested coolers and found that the ~50 qt. Coleman held ice for the same amount of time (measured in days) as the Yeti and other big name (read expensive) coolers for a fraction of the cost. So I can buy 4-6 Coleman...

Safety Warning for Berger 77 grain OTM: Pressure Testing Update

My guess is that Berger will want the spent cases and any unfired rounds and will willingly replace them at no charge. I had a similar experience with Barnes Vor-TX ammo in my 7mm-08. One shot felt different, having more recoil than the others. It was tight but did extract from my Savage Axis...

    We've updated the site!

I do a weekly summary and instead of going directly to the thread as in the past it asks me to login. I actually had to go lookup my login info and pw as it is stored by Google.

What Short Action Elk Caliber for Youth Rifle

I'm in the 7mm-08 club with a ~22 in. barrel. Plenty of bullet (enough for a moose, maybe even a bison), flat shooting, manageable recoil, adequate range. Won't burn out a barrel in 1500 rounds like 6.5 CM. One buddy's daughter kills elk with her 7-08 which he says is a "great caliber". He's...

Looking for advice on a cleaning rod.

For thorough cleaning at home I use a guide and the Tipton Carbon Fiber one piece cleaning rods for handguns, rifles (.22 cal and 7mm) and shotguns. In the field kit I have the appropriate 'Bore Snake'. I also carry a less than .22 cal. sized dowel in my rifle case in the event that a case needs...

    Mixed powders

He's working on a Darwin Award... Generally, one does not mix powders from different lots. One certainly does not mix different powders into one batch and then reload with them. With all of the different bullet weights, different powders and different charges this is a disaster in the making.

    Rifle primers

I just go "shopping" in my Dad's garage...I've found more primers, powder brass and bullets than I, my brother or nephew will ever use... Thanks Dad for being such a hoarder!

    Disposing of old powder

Black Powder is essentially blasting powder like they used in mines or to blast Railroad tunnels in the 1860's. Cleaning out my Dad's garage I came across the can of DuPont FFG Black powder that we used to make pipe (actually shotgun shell) bombs with 50+ years ago when we were kids. It works...

    Newbie Lesson-Learned #1 ...

I wasn't aware of wet media tumbling before this post. Essentially it combines the steps I would perform to clean my cases. Every method has its own plus and minus factors. That said, I process my cases in the following sequence. I recently processed about 2,000, .223/5.56 cases along with all...

Rifle Scopes Scopes Will Not Keep Zero, Help!

To me this sounds like an equipment problem. Specifically I would suspect the scope mounts. I've had scopes in supposedly tight mounts move. One forward/aft and another rotating counter clockwise. I've lapped the scope rings and added a shim if inserts were not supplied with the rings. I also...

Tired of wasting time and money into slow loads working my way up anyone else?

A lot of the discussion focused on velocity and then "tuning" for accuracy. I usually start looking for accuracy and then tuning around that load. Typically I start my loads at or above the midpoint of the suggested range. I've found that 70 to 75% is where I get the best results. I load 3...

Tried Resizing 6.5 Creedmoor and Failed, Need Suggestions

Flyright stated what I was thinking with a friends experience to draw upon. This is almost certainly a die incompatibility issue. Looking at Dillion's website, I'd invest in a set of Redding dies or RCBS dies.

What's Your Oldest Jar of Powder??

I have recently "rescued" several cans of DuPont powder from my Dad's garage. I now have the can of Black Powder that we used for "Shotgun Shell Bombs" (Why waste a good piece of pipe?) when I was a kid in the mid-60's. There are others in cardboard tubes from Hercules et. al. I've told my...

    Wanting to buy/build a "90%" Hunting/Ranch Rifle

I would move towards the .284 (7mm) caliber. I have a 6mm and the maximum weight bullets are 115 to 120 gr, less if shooting copper. I went to a 7mm specifically for pig hunting in the People's Republik of Kalifornia. In the PRK my standard hunting rounds are 139 or 140 gr. copper. With...

    AR-15 blew up! Thoughts?

Yes, cases do fail. I suspect this is the most likely cause. From what I've read so far I know they were firing .223 Rem ammo but I still don't know what brand of ammo. Was it Remington, Winchester or Federal ammo? Maybe the cheapest ammo available at "bullets r' us"... It is pretty difficult...
