Install flash hider - clamp on upper or barrel?

I purchased both the flash hider and crush washer from White Oak. They've been great on the phone and provided a lot of help along the way while I was researching parts for this build. Once the flash hider is finger tight it is about 3/4 turn away from where it needs to be. That strikes me as...

Install flash hider - clamp on upper or barrel?

Great, thanks everyone! Just to check in, what I understand know is either the upper receiver clamp or the Reaction Rod would work just fine for installing the flash hider. I haven't purchased the upper clamp yet but the price of the Reaction Rod will probably know that one out of...

Install flash hider - clamp on upper or barrel?

Thanks, I see what you meant now. So I need to clamp the upper receiver while tightening the barrel nut. Is this the weakness then of the reaction rod, that it doesn't grip either the barrel nut or the upper receiver? As I understand it, the reaction rod only grips the barrel via the barrel...

Install flash hider - clamp on upper or barrel?

I'm not sure I understand. If the clamp is on the barrel and I'm turning the barrel nut isn't that one part being fixed in place?

Install flash hider - clamp on upper or barrel?

Can the barrel nut also be tightened while clamping the barrel?

Install flash hider - clamp on upper or barrel?

I am assembling a new upper. I am trying to figure out how I will secure the upper while tightening the flash hider. Is it better to use a barrel clamp in a vise or to use the upper receiver block and clamp it from the upper? Thanks for your thoughts!

AR 15 - Switched to PRS bolt barely goes forward

Since I moved from a carbine to a rifle stock I can't replace only one component at a time. I still don't have the solution but I have isolated the problem. The buffer and spring are moving freely in the receiver extension. The bolt carrier also moves freely in the extension. However, the...

Clean AR barrel with no solvents, dry brush only?

This past weekend I saw a demonstration of cleaning an AR in which the instructor said to never use solvents. He dropped the cleaning rod end down through the chamber and pulled on it from the muzzle end. He had a bronze brush attached and did this repeatedly until he proclaimed the bore...

AR 15 - Switched to PRS bolt barely goes forward

I bought the A2 version. My understanding is the only difference between them is the A2 includes a spacer. The receiver extension is the same. From that I would guess the spring is too, but I don't know that for certain. There is no unusual noise from the spring when I pull the charging handle.

AR 15 - Switched to PRS bolt barely goes forward

Sorry, by measurement I thought the issue was strength of the spring. I had no idea how I would measure that. The spring is 42 coils and 12 1/8" long. The carbine spring it replaced is considerably shorter but I didn't measure it.

AR 15 - Switched to PRS bolt barely goes forward

I have charged it both ways, using the bolt release and by hand. How would I measure the spring? Once I've done that, what value tells me it's a rifle vs carbine spring?

AR 15 - Switched to PRS bolt barely goes forward

I just recently switched from a collapsible stock to a PRS. I changed the receiver extension to full length and added the Brownells stock completion kit (rifle spring and buffer). I haven't even fired it yet and already noticed an issue. The bolt carrier is moving forward too slow and...

    Which lower parts kit?

I am looking at lower parts kits and have been quite surprised about the low reviews most get, including Colt. It's either poorly finished, missing, or duplicate parts. I have already purchased an 18" White Oak barrel and a Magpul PRS. The upper will come from WOA too. The trigger will be...

    How critical is bolt selection?

In planning my build I've started looking at bolts. My understanding so far is that it is preferable to get a bolt with the barrel. The only part I have decided on so far is the barrel, which I purchased from White Oak. They told me so long as I buy a bolt that is mil-spec I'll be okay. They...

Building an AR, does choice of receivers matter much?

Lot's of great info and discussion, thanks everyone! The purpose of this build will be informal paper punching at a range with 100 and 200 yds positions. So I won't need range finding capabilities just a system capable of small groups. I am new to precision AR shooting and this will be my...

Building an AR, does choice of receivers matter much?

I have been doing a lot of reading (especially on this site!) trying to work out what will go into my upcoming AR-15 build. I find a lot of material regarding barrel choices and triggers, no problem there. And things like hand guards, muzzle devices, sights, etc. seem to rely mostly on the...
