Number of shots to establish zero

Moving forward my zeros will be established with 20-30 rounds.

New scope for a western hunt?

You should be able to get a NF NX8 4-32x50 F1 with MIL-C reticle on EV for about your budget max. But of your choices, the Trijicon Tenmile would be my pick given that it's built to be rugged. Don't be like this guy who made a video 3 months ago about how zero shift is an exaggerated issue and...

    Vortex Razor LHT

I had an LHT 4.5-22 in the past and its turrets were atrocious, but otherwise it was a solid enough scope. I felt the turrets on a new one the other day and they were still pretty bad but not nearly as bad as mine was years ago. I much prefer the Maven RS1.2 as a hunting scope even if it's 5oz...

    Vortex Razor LHT

How does AFOV mesh with something like a NF ATACR 7-35? That still has some low power tunneling but I've heard people say its FOV in the medium power range is actually fine. Is that just cope or can both be true at the same time?

    Vortex Razor LHT

Oh that is pretty cool. I imagine me sticking to lower powers will help, which their SHR-MIL reticle design makes pretty easy.

Do you happen to know the Maven RS1.2 2.5-15x44 AFOV off the top of your head? I'm definitely curious now.

Rifle Scopes Tips to "Safely" Reset NightForce Zero Stop?

Always possible. I kind of doubt it's the scope but there are always other factors. Is the rifle in a chassis or stock, and is it bedded? It's seemingly become a topic of discussion on whether certain chassis benefit from bedding. The owner of MPA, for instance, says MPA chassis benefit from...

Any idea on the culprit for the shift?

Area 419 Tactical One-Piece Scope Mount

I'm clueless on the math of how this stuff works. Would the Match rings resist tube slippage more or less than the Hunt rings? They seem to have a wider contact surface but the same torque spec on the same number of screws, just not sure if that's better or worse.

    Your PVA prefit experience

I'm 100% sure I'm overly fixated on it. However, I just threw some variables into Hornady 4DOF assuming a 25 yard zero just to see how much the change at 100 yards would be in an extreme situation. 143gr ELD-X at 2600 fps MV 0 ft elevation 10% humidity 10 degrees fahrenheit 143gr ELD-X at 2700...

    Your PVA prefit experience

The way I understand it (which may be completely wrong) is there are almost no conditions where my 100 yard zero should change. I've played with it in a ballistic calculator before and I couldn't manage to change the conditions enough to get a measurable 100 yard zero change. I'd set the zero to...

    Your PVA prefit experience

Well I've already addressed every other variable other than the scope rings at this point. Though the rings I'm using are ARC M-Brace rings so I'm not horribly worried about them. I'm just about to start shooting and preparing for another destination hunting trip this November and as a result...

    Your PVA prefit experience

I had that happen with a different rifle last fall but my new rifle build has a barrel installed by PVA in 6CM. On the off chance I experience a zero-shift (very unlikely to be the barrel I'm sure), would torquing the barrel to 100 ft/lbs change the headspace or cause issues if the barrel was...

    Your PVA prefit experience

I'm mainly curious about it because I've been trying to zero-shift-proof my hunting rifle after I had a shift while traveling to a hunt last fall. I know that some builders torque magnum barrels to 100 ft/lbs and non-magnums to 75 ft/lbs but I don't know if there's any relation to zero-shift or...

    Your PVA prefit experience

@bohem out of curiosity, do you have any thoughts as to the optimal barrel torque to prevent zero shift? It seems like a lot of the guys who are really into preventing zero-shift torque theirs to 100 ft/lbs but I'm unsure how much goes into that.

Elk Hunting Rifles, What are you Using?

It took some maturing before I finally admitted the Rokslide guys actually make some good points on cartridges, bullets, optics, etc. They definitely make it difficult to accept with their attitude sometimes but that doesn't mean they're wrong.

Trigger options..... bix n andy triggertech diamond or timney hit

I bought a BnA Pro-X two stage from Redhawk Rifles or whatever their name is. It must have been a returned one because the second stage pull weight screw was stripped to hell. I had to get a new lower sear from BC and install it but it was actually pretty simple. Now I'm very comfortable...

Elk Hunting Rifles, What are you Using?

My western gun has a different scope on it right now since my destination this fall is Arizona for coues deer. For coues/pronghorn I use the best quality optics I have since for coues I really need it just to see the animals especially in the shade, and for pronghorn it doesn't really matter how...

Hunting & Fishing First Western Elk Hunt…Essential Gear/Clothing Advice Needed

Off the top of my head I have a couple important ones. 1. Good tripod and a way to mount your binoculars (and preferably your rifle too) to it. It absolutely changes the game for glassing/shooting. Keep in mind you will spend hours and hours every day glassing. The tripod makes that much more...
