Rookie looking for opinion on my first bolt action gun

My range enjoyment went way up when I replaced my starter Savages with some Tikka's. I am left handed, so it was a pretty easy decision.. (Wish I listened to the folks here the first time - would have saved some time and money....)

    Tikka T3TAC A1 General Questions

I left my trigger as it came out of the box. It is light enough and has really good feel. I am using the brake though - it's loud but very effective. My .308 TAC is more accurate and feels better to shoot than my .223 CTR. I just lube the back of the lugs on the bolt. That's it.

First Long range Lefty bolt gun

If you just want something out of the box, mount glass, and pull trigger, you can't go wrong with the Tikka TAC series. I hate heavy bolt lift and I am able to lift the bolt on my lefty TAC with just two fingers. SMoooooooooooth..

    .308 Winchester

I use N140 from time to time in my 308 Tikka Tac. 175 SMK, 42.2gr, Avg: 2,531, 24" barrel, provided many .4 - .5 moa groups on average.

Left Hand rifle vs adjusting to standard (right)

Left eyed, right handed as well. Still have my RT handers, but every new rifle is LH. Yes, you can train yourself to shoot RH, but why? If LH is natural and easy, go with it. Spend the time and energy bettering your rifleman skills.

Low-mid cost entry build and gear

I started LD not too long ago. I went the cheap route, did not listen to the good advice given on this form, and found I had to upgrade gear relatively quickly. Not saying you have to jump in with a $4K rifle, but you need some base quality to avoid frustration chasing issues. I went the...

Thanks! I have a new 24" CTR that I am ready to start building a load for. This helps...

Hey Kentucky - how much N140 you using for your load described above ^? Would happen to know your avg velocity?

    223 Bolt Gun (current climate)

I'm glad I just got my 223 CTR. Who knew being a lefty was ever going to be an advantage at any point.. Lol...

Jump to reloading now or wait

My simple 'two cents' from my simple mind and cheap bastard mentality - If you enjoy the process, it only enhances the overall enjoyment of shooting You don't need expensive stuff. I still use my simple Lee 'beginners kit' press and dies. Only upgrades were a manual powder trickler, hand...

    Chassis right or left

^^ The above two gentlemen are on the money. I am amazed how much more comfortable I am behind the gun when I finally got a left bolt. Trust..

    .223 - 5.56

I have a N140 load that has been working quite well, but it may be a bit warm. I share anyway and YMMV. 25gr N140 CCI BR-4 primer Lapua brass 69 SMK, .024 jump ~2,950 fps (if memory serves) 26" 1:9 barrel I like N140. Works great in my .308 as well.

    Which Savage. 308?

I also have the 12fV. Good rifle, but I HIGHLY recommend anyone to step up to a Tikka before going Savage. Action is light years better than the Savage for not much more money. ( I should add I have 3 Savages and have grown tired of all the little niggly issues with them.)

    Factory .223

Being lefty and 'poor' is a challenge - I share your pain. $800 (and lefty) sounds like more of a challenge if you are looking for something match worthy. I just bit the bullet and pony'd up to a Tikka T3x CTR in .223. It would be an extra $250 on top of your budget - so you could cut costs...

    Scale question

Here are my 2 cents FWIW: I only load for accuracy and not volume, so I like beam scales and I weigh every charge. I also find beam scale loading relaxing (with music), almost like meditation - crazy, right? lol... I did some level of research on the topic of scales before I jumped into...

    imr4895 or imr4064 in short 308win w/ 175 ?

4064 is money with the 175. I have used that combo across 4 different barrels (10 tw, 11tw and 22-24in) and had good enough results to keep on using it.

    .223 - 5.56

I have been running 25.4 of N140 with the 69 SMK (3,055 avg over 10 shots) CCI BR-4, Lapua brass, .024 jump 26" 1:9 factory barrel I have just been shooting this at 100Y. Very accurate (for me).
