    The problem is probably.....Howa. Its an inexpensive hunting gun in my eyes, what you posted fits its price bracket. You roll the dice on these factory guns. Have you tried 107 sierra or similar weigh class bullets? I like those Howa Minis. I'd like one in a grendel or 7.62x39mm.

    Going mtu or similar would help with balance and handling. Go 1.25 for 5" then taper to 1". Like a proof comp contour. Still very rigid and darn heavy.

    All great choices for what you are doing. Flip a coin Chop and thread the 243 if it has life left in it. I love my light short 243, all the heavy 26"ers stay at the bench.

    Barrel wear or a manufacturing problem?

    I have a 300nm prefit from xcaliber(not carbon), its a shooter. I went 10 tw 5r, 26", 7 contour. All I've put through it after fireforming is 225 eldm. I would try a different bullets like the 215 and 245 berger. You'll know in 5 shots if its worth chasing. Some barrels are duds.
