    Malfunction question

Curious if anyone has an idea what happened or what may be the cause. Pulled the trigger on a tikka CTR. Felt a click, but no fire. Instead, a tiny spring and pin flew out the back of my action and hit me in the cheek. Safety is now locked. Bolt will not close.

.308 barrel length, twist, powder burn rate, bullet gr interactions

I'd like to build a carry .308 that can consistently reach out to 1027yds (my range). There are going to be trade-offs for sure, so I'd like to try to get a clearer handle of what I should be looking for in an overall system that combines barrel length, twist, bullet gr, and powder burn choices...

    Tempest comparison?

Beginning to take a hard look at a new .308. I'm used to the 60-70 degree bolt throws of Sako TRG and a Tikka CTR, and prefer 60 over 90 degree. Just feels right to me. Those are also my point of reference. Anyone have experience with GAP Tempest? How does that action compare with either of...

How does a 20" barrel affect start/max loads?

All powder manufacturer's load data that I've seen is for a 24" barrel. When developing a load for a 20" barrel, should I look at Starting/Max powder load differently? Should the Start/Max loads be more, less, or the same? I guess the confusing bit for me on the published data is whether the...

    Barnes LRX for 1:12 twist?

Mapping a potential build and bullet here... Considering getting an AI AT .308 with 1:12 twist. Also looking at pairing that with a ~175 gr all-purpose target/hunt bullet that I can (mostly) hit steel at up to 1087yd range. I don't compete, at least not now. Couple questions: For that...

Seating depth test. Thoughts on where to tune?

This is an update on a previous thread: here. Looking to tune this seating depth test. Could use some insight on best practice. Shooting: 6.5 Creedmoor 20" barrel IMR 4451, 40.4 gr Federal large rifle primers Lapua 139 Scenar-L The target crosses are 2"x2" 4 shot groups No chrono Following a...

Thoughts on where to go from this load test?

Not very experienced with load testing, and could use some guidance on what to try next. Posting somewhat dubious results on my first load test for 6.5 Creedmoor at 100yds. Should I pick one of these and play with seating depth? Shooting Tikka CTR 20" barrel, 6.5 Creedmoor IMR 4451 Federal...

both eyes open and eye relief

I've heard for a long time that you should keep both eyes open when looking through a scope, but whenever I tried it, I'd get double vision, and it was really hard to make sense of what I was looking at through the scope. I figured I was cross dominant, and spent the rest of my years shooting...

    Rifle Scopes USO BFX-10

Anyone handle the USO BFX-10 yet? How does it compare to the ST-10 or the SWFA 10x42 HD?

Rifle Scopes Scope to ring mounting

Found an interesting technique I hadn't seen before to mount a scope to rings. At 00:57, he uses latex strips as a bed. Have not seen this before. I've always mounted scope directly to ring. Time for a sanity check. Does adding the extra strip make sense? Nik

    Rifle Scopes SWFA Backorder

Anyone know the story behind this? So many of SWFA's scopes seem constantly on backorder. Been watching this for months now. Are they just that popular, or phasing out?

Rifle Scopes 10x fixed effective range

While we all can appreciate the flexibility and versatility that a variable power scope offers, I'm curious if we can (subjectively) quantify practical or "comfortable" min/max ranges of a fixed 10x scope with decent glass. This isn't intended to spark a debate on fixed vs. variable, but is...

    To skeletonize stock or not

Of the stock options out there, we have some with an aluminum skeleton wrapped with composite, and then we have some that are that are fiberglass or some composite without the skeleton. For those who choose one over the other, was this a deciding factor, and why? Nik

    60 degree bolt action comparison

Have had a Sako TRG 300 Win Mag for years, and love that action. Have a couple other rifles with a 90 degree throw, and definitely prefer the TRG. Never had a custom rifle, but have been researching options, and am looking at custom actions comparable to the TRG's. Concept is a "do all" 6.5...

Scope rings--When is "good enough" good enough?

Question on scope ring quality. I've always gravitated toward the more respected brands, just because I wanted to cover all my bases, without really understanding the why (and never had a ring issue). Curious though what sets "good" scope rings apart from not so good. I've seen some threads on...

Barrel contour, length and rigidity question

Have a question on barrel dimension selection. I understand certain basics that: A longer barrel increases bullet velocity (flattens trajectory), but decreases barrel rigidity and increases weight. A shorter barrel increases rigidity and accuracy, decreases weight, but decreases velocity. A...
