    Gunsmithing Test Indicators

Re: Test Indicators When I run the lathe under power after dialing in the barrel I'm only running 70 RPM's, I think that's the slowest the machine goes. I hear what you mean though. I only run the machine as a last check, usually by this time, I've spun the spindle in neutral many times.

    Gunsmithing Test Indicators

Re: Test Indicators I start out with the .0005, then when I get close I switch to a .0001. With a real heavy barrel and the spindle in neutral I strive to get .0001 total indicator movement. Then run the barrel under power usually gets .0002.

    Gunsmithing rough model 70 action

Re: rough model 70 action What are you trying to do? Are you just busting rust? I've used a bead blast cabinet to clean all the old blueing off actions before I reblued them. You aren't going to remove very much material with emery cloth or toothpaste. You start using a file or a dremel...

Gunsmithing Metallurgy of Modern Custom Builds

Re: Metallurgy of Modern Custom Builds I've taken several blueprinting and geometric dimensioning courses while I was getting my machinist certification. Metallurgy sounds interesting, but its closely related to chemistry. I've had to hold my eyelids open during several metallurgy lectures.

    winchester 70 actions ?

Re: winchester 70 actions ? Winchester Model 70 actions are excellent actions. Many accessories for the M700 can be found for the M70, you may have to look harder for some. Williams makes one-piece bottom metal for M70. Not trying to beat a dead horse but Winchester vs. Remington, or Ford...

    SELL me on a Remington???????

Re: SELL me on a Remington??????? If you are looking for a hunting rifle in short action caliber I would purchase a Weatherby Vanguard/Howa rifle. The Vanguard has a flat, base with an integral recoil lug action similar to a Winchester Model 70. Bell and Carlson and HS Precision make stocks...

Gunsmithing CZ 550 trigger? Pics included

Re: CZ 550 trigger? Pics included That ball bearing is what makes the ejector work. You may have to pull everything off to expose the hole that the bearing goes into. I tried to place my pick to point where the bearing is located. If this doesn't help I may be able to take a series of...

    Remington SPS-T not extracting...

Re: Remington SPS-T not extracting... Did that Wolf ammo have the lacquer on the cases? If it does, you need to make sure you scrub the chamber really good. That lacquer can build up in the chamber. That's the only thing I can think of.

    AR15 front sight question

Re: AR15 front sight question I'm not trying to make this to complicated, but check out Yankee Hills flip-up/front sight. www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=21446/Product/AR_15_M16_CLAMP_ON_FRONT_SIGHT_GAS_BLOCK. I've used them in the past, easy to install, easy to use and tough.

    .280 ackley imp.

Re: .280 ackley imp. I built a .280 on a Model 70 two years ago. Thought about the Ackley, but went with standard .280. I used a Shilen 1:9 barrel at 25 inches. I believe the contour is #5, I measured the muzzle and it was .695. I used an H/S Precision stock. With factory Remington green...

    PTG Bolts

Re: PTG Bolts I bought a Rem700 in 22-250 for the action. Come to find out it was a pre-64 and has a riveted extractor. I'm going to replace the factory bolt with a PTG bolt with a Sako extractor. I'm building up a .308 and I'm expecting a barrel from Krieger at the end of March. Just...

Gunsmithing Looking for a prethreaded 700 barrel for use w/can

Re: Looking for a prethreaded 700 barrel for use w/can The CZ 527 Varmint is an excellent rifle. Another downside you have to consider about rebarreling that Remington, is the wait. Most good smith's have 6-12 month wait times. I think you could have that CZ's barrel threaded much faster...

Gunsmithing Looking for a prethreaded 700 barrel for use w/can

Re: Looking for a prethreaded 700 barrel for use w/can Are you only interested in Remington? Take a look at CZ: www.cz-usa.com/products/view/cz-527-varmint/. Chambered in .223 comes with a 1:9 twist and detachable magazines. I have one and it shoots sub-MOA with factory 69 grain match...

Gunsmithing Changing barrel on a 700 PSS

Re: Changing barrel on a 700 PSS You will need to inlet the stock for the larger barrel diameter. Take a look at these: www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=6796/Product/BARREL_BEDDING_TOOL. They do more cutting, scraping than sanding and will make a slow job quicker. I have a set that I have used...

Gunsmithing Stock suggestions for a Krieger #4

Re: Stock suggestions for a Krieger #4 Since you really want to use a McMillan later, I would try to find a used SPS Varmint stock. Its a cheap, factory plastic stock, but will have clearance for the Remington varmint contour. Its cheap and temporary, but you will be able to shoot the rifle...

    Gunsmithing re-contouring barrel

Re: re-contouring barrel I had a Winchester Model 52, that when I got it was drilled/tapped for scope mounts. The front sight was gone and I cut the barrel off about 3 inches to get rid of the dovetail and recrowned it. It shot the same after it was cut and recrowned. I don't know what the...
