Generally ball powders are known to meter better than extruded powders. They were never in favor of "off the shoulder" shooters as it was thought that ignition time was greater. Never saw it tested but suspect it was true. Benchrest shooters often used ball powder.

Odd. Did you notice it before you cleaned it? Did you inspect the end of the firing pin? Without some damage to tip of FP I don't see how this could be a "new" issue If not new issue and FP tip is normal I wonder if the rifle has been shot a lot. The FP hole in face of bolt could be out of spec...

The shorter barrel on the 22/250 would only be my choice if suppressed. If suppressed, 18-20 is fine. You lose some velocity. Still not a bad set up. Unsuppressed, it's going to be punishing.
Frank's gun was nicknamed "pear burner" as it shot out flame in low light. In S Texas durning dry times as the 1930's prickly pear cactus had the thorns burned off with pear burners so cows had something to eat.
What I have done. Tune your gas system so you are not overgassing. Limit the # of rifles you are shooting/cleaning. Use clean burning ammo. Clean as needed.
