I hadn't come across the Steiner Military 3–15x50 before. I'm guessing it's a new scope, essentially a scaled-down version of their 5–25x56. Same dual-turn indicator and option for the MSR reticle, which I like a lot. It could be a good match for my .308 bolt gun. Any word on availability &...
During the 2012 session, the bill permitting the use of suppressors for hunting never made it out to a final vote. Has anyone caught news if it's to be re-introduced this session? —Andreas
LaRue announced their PredatOBR at SHOT. It's the lightweight PredatAR chassis with the heavy OBR barrel and port selector. They'll offer both 7.62 and 5.56 versions. Looks like a winner. I wonder if they'd sell just the 5.56 upper to drop onto the LaRue lower I got back in the pre-OBR days…...
The Georgia legislature is considering legalizing hunting with suppressors: link. It's currently illegal to use suppressors for any kind of hunting. —Andreas
The front lower sling loop on an AI has a rather small opening. Is there a replacement that offers a larger opening to accept a beefy swivel or HK hook? —Andreas
I got in a TAB rear bag yesterday and am liking it a lot after some dry fire practice that evening. It's all in the position of the strap. You hold the bag so that the strap runs vertically and slip your four fingers through it. For right handers, your thumb then sits vertically on the left side...
I'm wondering if anyone makes a supplementary lens that attaches onto the front of a rifle scope to allow it to focus on a target a few meters away. This would be for indoor dry fire. —Andreas
I'm about to order an AI AW in .308 from Mile High Shooting and will have them cut a 24" barrel model to 22" and thread it. The rifle will be getting an AAC Cyclone as soon as my bank account recovers. I'm not planning to run a muzzle brake. Any reasons to go with one thread pitch or the other...
I'm planning to get one of these rifles in the fall and see a lot of comments on the relative ease of swapping AI barrels compared to the TRG. Is this because the headspace of the AI is baked into the design (torque down the barrel and you're done) while the TRG requires careful use of go/no-go...
I'm using an Orion 102 Maksutov as my spotting scope and find that it can just resolve .223 bullet holes at 300 yards. The limitation seems to be one of atmospheric effects. I'm wondering what kind of scopes other folks are using and how far away they can see their bullet holes. I'm planning to...
I'm putting together another AR-15 and am wondering if anyone knows of a lower parts kit that doesn't include the trigger, hammer, and pistol grip. In the past, I've used a DPMS kit that includes these items and simply installed my own trigger and pistol grip. But this seems like a waste of...
Both the Mega MA-TEN and Iron Ridge Arms IRA-X caught my eye as upper/lower combos for assembling a DPMS-pattern .308 carbine. I'm happy to pay for quality, but the IRA-X is twice the price of the MA-TEN. Can anyone comment on what the IRA-X offers to justify that premium? I could purchase the...
I recently rebuilt a cheap RRA carbine with some choice components: Centurion Arms midweight barrel, LaRue handguard, Giselle DMR trigger, Aimpoint ML3, etc. A nagging issue is the play between the upper and lower receiver—the rifle rattles like a cheap toy. The upper receiver moves side to side...
I'm looking for a recommendation on an AR-15 upper receiver block for installing/removing barrels and free-float rails. The two main styles appear to be clamshells and blocks with pins (e.g., the DPMS action block). I'm leaning toward the DPMS action block, the design appears better suited for...
I've been looking at options for replacing the Tupperware stock on my Browning A-Bolt II Stainless Stalker in .308 and hit on the Bell & Carlson Medalist. This is a sporter rifle that goes hunting on occasion but mostly gets used at the rifle range shooting prone with a sling, seated, and...
I recently finished putting together a target AR-15 based off a 16" LaRue Stealth Sniper System upper and detailed the build here. This info will hopefully be of assistance to others contemplating similar projects. —Andreas
