How long will it be before our manual scopes are history? Is the Burris Eliminator and the Remington 20-20 showing the way of the future? Digital cameras are wiping out film. Compound bows taking nearly all of the recurve market. The computer has sealed the fate of manual typewriters. Hard line...
If you are brand new I would suggest a .308. Mild recoil and fairly cheap to shoot. Get the best scope you can afford that has repeatable clicks. It is far better to save up and get quality used equipment. If you are serious you will have to get serious equipment sooner or later. Shoot...
Litz's books are very informative. The time and expense of getting the data must have been very high. If I can learn something without reinventing the wheel I will take it gladly.
If you are having large groups after small groups I would suspect the scope or bases. The .338 has a lot of recoil and it can make things move around. The first thing I would do is switch to another scope. My money would be on the scope, rings, or bases in that order.
Great video with good data. I am sure it took a ton of work. The honest reporting of 21 shots to get on is appreciated. The wind is the problem. At that distance it was probably going two or three directions at once. Even in hundred yard benchrest it is very common to have flags going is...
In a 30 caliber it is very difficult to beat the 300 Win Mag. One can get right at 3K with the 190 SMK. One can usually get 2850+ shooting the 220 SMK. Recoil can be controlled by going to a heavier barrel and/muzzle break. With heavier barrels and a good shooter it typically gets very good...
Great info. I have yet to hold a "beast" in my hands but like many I knew it was coming. It sounds like another great scope for Nightforce. I have always felt the glass on the older Nightforces was fine. If the glass on the Beast is even better that is gravy. I have three Nightforce scopes...
Broz This is a great cold bore shot. Very very few shooters have made that type of shot in their entire lives. I live on the west side of Montana. In Coram, close to the park. I hope to be trying the .338 Berger in a heavy machine rest to see what can be done. That probably won't happen...
Coldboremiracle Your experience with keeping track of your shots is very relative. Like gamblers we tend to forget our losses. In response to Supergyro, if the rifles shot right at half-minute at closer ranges then one is comparing apple to apples fairly well. Naturally a poor rifle or a poor...
Thanks to everyone who posted their thoughts. I have shot several thousand shots through a 300 Win using a serious rail gun set-up. Human error was nil. Past 1000 yards the number of hits was not impressive. A 40% hit ratio on a 15 inch target was a good day. Some days higher but a lot of...
260shooter You are exactly right. His book completely slipped my aging mind. I even own the book. I asked Mr. Litz if he was willing to share the software because there are many interesting questions to be explored. He is busy and did not get back to me. When I read the various claims about...
What I would like to know is the hit probabilty of the various cartridges in question. Has anyone ran a test on a given target at say, 1100.1300, and 1500 yards (meters, whatever). I would like the data from .308, 300WM, and the .338 Lapula. Five five shot aggregates would be nice. To me that...
Long range shooting/hunting without a good rangefinder gets old in a hurry. If the shooter does not know the range it is pretty useless to own a long range rifle. The Terrapin is very good. I own one myself. I have owned the Lecia and the Swaro and there is no comparing. Whether we like it...
You certainly can do a chamber with just a finsh reamer. I have done it a number of times. Most people take out excess material with a drill. You have to be careful but it is not hard. You can also buy drills that have bushings which is safer. Nevertheless, a rougher reamer is very nice if...
The 30 inch barrel is a good choice. Keep in mind that rifles get pretty front heavy which is why many long range target rifles have longer than normal stocks. Fluting barrels has its advantages and every ounce counts when total rifle weight has to be controlled. It also depends on how much...
As I said earlier I would take a .308 over a .223 any day. Certainly the .308 costs more to feed but a good barrel will last at least 2000 rounds. If you can pick any round and you are shooting at 250 yards then a 6PPC will shoot the wings off a .308. A PPC is cheap to shoot and it is truly...
I am a big believer in saving up money and buying top quality. You can get into a used Nightforce for around 1200.00 if you are lucky and wait. If your interest is in the .338 Lapula then you probably want to shoot long distances. You will like the higher power scopes. Many people on this...
Re: Shilen barrels? Very good barrels. You will be happy with your purchase. My last Shilen was in a 6BR. If conditions were good and I did my part it would shoot in the "2's."
Re: Coriolis Effect Long range hits are a matter of probability. Better rifle, better shooter the odds go up. The more known factors that are plugged in means the odds go up. Coriolis is well known. However, entering the data does not assure the hit. As a simple function of mathematics...
