I do not enlarge the flash holes, add any kind of filler or lubrication of jacketed bullets. Cast bullets have lube in the grooves already. Going to look into powder coating the cast bullets to eliminate the lube.
you can still use a 10" twist barrel yes it is still loud and you will need ear protection - i don't think there will be much if any difference with barrel lengths listed have used Titegroup as my subsonic powder with no issues in either jacketed or cast
The Hodgdon site takes H4895 max load for the bullet weight and uses 60% of that for reduced loads. Works very well. No worries. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
I have run both full-auto and the slide fire and find that the slide fire will not work well in some situations as it requires a certain level of recoil impulse to operate properly. Given a choice, I would go with a full-auto over the slide-fire. Acuuracy suffers as well with the slide-fire...
I have all three of my Rem 700's set up with the McRee Rem-Age kit using a Broughton and (2) Criterion barrels - all the accuracy you'll ever need. Calibers are a .260 Rem and (2) .308's.
WC844 is NOT the same as H335 They are close in burn rates but you need to work up your load with WC844 as it is not a commercial canister powder - each lot can be very different. Primers DO make a difference - I have seen a 50fps increase when switching from Win to CCI primers -...
I use 7.5gr of Titegroup with a Lyman 311284 220gr cast bullet that runs around 1075fps - gives me MOA or better at 100m - costs less than 10 cents per shot. Use a std. primer - either Win or CCI. Titegroup is not case position sensitive in my experience and gives very consistent velocities.
Re: how far can I cut down a .308 barrel I went from a 24" to an 18" barrel and my velocity dropped about 150fps - most say that you lose 25 - 30 fps per inch of barrel cut.
Re: Experiences with Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44 I've had no problem with mine. Just wish it was available in FFP back then. Would not hesitate to buy another one.
Re: 6.5 mm, 123 gr. vs. 139 If the wind picks up the heavies will drift much less and still have to punch when they get there. I will take my 140's and 142's over the 123's anyday at that distance.
