My velocities went to the moon!

Re: My velocities went to the moon! I've got a trip to Wal-Mart in my future plans today to look at a Pachmayr Decellerator. I'm not blessed with recoil-absorbing pecs, it's all skin and bone, and I have the Yellow Badge of Courage on my right shoulder right now (along with recoil zits...

bullet weights - when do you start to worry?

Re: bullet weights - when do you start to worry? So I had a question here - do you weigh each individual projectile? If so, what's your acceptable level of variance? Do you tolerate any?

bullet weights - when do you start to worry?

Got some Montana Gold 55-grainers, and I thought I'd get smart and weigh them. Most turn out at 55.0. A sizable number are 55.2, with about 75% as many @ 55.1 gr. There are very few 54.9 gr bullets and none higher or lower than these. This put me on a tear - how well made are all the bullets...

My velocities went to the moon!

I fired that M1903A3 I bragged to you all about. Handloaded 100 rounds of 3 different types of bullets and powders, and bought a box of Win Power Point hunting ammo to get "on track" with what velocities would look like coming out of commercially produced ammo. I fired the Winny stuff (didja...

Finding the right COAL for my Rifle

Re: Finding the right COAL for my Rifle Guys, some of you cats just crack me up. One newbie shooter comes into the Optics forum looking for advice on a low-end scope and he gets told to pound sand. Some of you characters are spending nigh on $2k for optics but are afraid to spend $40 on a...

Re: Colorado: Places to Shoot, People to Shoot With This is tremendously tempting. It's a helluva drive for me but it might be worth it. Do you guys think I might be able to use the steels to work up a couple of loads on my new Springfield 03A3?

Do flat base bullets give higher chamber pressure?

Question: Will a flat based bullet of similar weight give higher chamber pressures than tapered/boat-tail?

Bead blasting media as vibratory polishing media?

Re: Bead blasting media as vibratory polishing media? Here's the upshot on this deal - don't do it. I got started with this stuff and saw that even only after 40 minutes the brass was looking like it was becoming pitted on the surface. It's similar to using clean walnut shells on clean brass...

Re: Colorado: Places to Shoot, People to Shoot With Guys, anybody in northern Colorado shoot at Pawnee? Are there any places still open where you can shoot long range stuff? I used to go up off 14 east of Ault but almost got hit there by stray shots or ricochets. I'd heard that the place was...

Question about surplus ammo and factory annealing

I've noticed when buying milsurp ammo in the past (when there was any, LOL) that much of it was annealed. Why? Is it a NATO spec or something? Why anneal something that's only going to be used once? IIRC, there aren't any governments that reload (excepting the competition groups within the...
