Question on bullet seating length and powder charg

Hey guys, Glenn Zediker says in his "Handloading for Competition" book to back a powder charge off by 1/2 grain when you seat the bullet to the lands. But he doesn't say when to increase the powder charge back to normal. Do you always keep it 1/2 grain under? If it shoots well touching the...

Zeroing a Redding Micrometer Seating Die

The die has been dialed in for years to seat .308's at 2.800. But now that I'm messing with seating depth I'd like to have 2.800 and 0 correspond on the micrometer. The die now reads about 2 1/2 marks above 0. So do I turn the micrometer to 0 and then stick the allen wrench in the top and...

Need info on spotting scopes with Mil Dot reticles

I noticed Bushnell (laughs) makes a FFP spotting scope with Mil Hash marks. Here's what the reticle looks like: Once you are on the link, scroll down to the reticle and click on it and it will give you a nice, enlarged picture. http://swfa.com/Bushnell-Excursion-FLP-Spotting-Scopes-C1482.aspx...

Don't soak your brass in vinegar

Spoke to Hornady this morning. Been seeing this bad idea about vinegar on other sites. Yes, it gets brass squeaky clean. It also is an acid and weakens brass. The more cleaning cycles, the weaker it gets. Hornady told me in no uncertain terms: Don't do it.

Why is .223 headspace in 10,000ths?

New to .223 handloading and was wondering why it's quoted as 1.4636 to 1.4736? Take .308 for example, SAAMI headspace is 1.630 to 1.640. Simple. Can I measure it as 1.463 to 1.473 and disregard the 6/10,000? Do I need a caliper that measures to ten thousandths?

Help on Bushing size for .223 Full Length S die

I'm in a pickle. I never loaded for .223 before but have everything except the bushings. Here's the problem. To figure out the right size bushing, measure a loaded round and subtract the desired constriction plus .001 for springback. I don't have a loaded round to measure and can't load one...

PDQ* Will a "zero" value wind effect elevation?

*PDQ= Possible Dumb Question In other words, lets say I'm shooting into a 10mph headwind. Wouldn't that slow the bullet down just a hair and show up as lost elevation? Or are bullets so aerodynamic that it doesn't matter?

    Strange Chrony behavior

Shooting a known load yesterday to get on paper at 600. No problems. Set up chrony (master beta...they need to change that name) and tested 42.8 grains of H4895 with Nosler Custom Comp 168 HPBT CCI Br2 Primer and Winchester case. A few days ago I stopped the test at 42.7 grains with good...

Ejector marks always a pressure sign?

My DPMS SASS shows ejector marks even with a mild load. It has shot 42.6 grains of H4859 with a 168 Nosler CC, CCI BR2 Primer in a Winchester case without problem. It was showing ejector marks yesterday at 70 degree temps with 41.5 grains in an LC case. Primers looked fine. Was testing...

Sleuth this headspace question for me

So I have this new gun. Autoloader. Had all sorts of strange behavior regarding case growth (there was none) so I popped a Forster 1.630 Match Headspace gauge in the chamber. New gauge. Forster sells them in .001 increments. Bolt wouldn't close on gauge. Gun is going back to manufacturer...

Feel like a newbie asking about case stretch

New DPMS SASS. 142 rounds through the gun. Loaded 50 new winchester cases with H4895 for ladder test. Loads ranged from 39.0 to 42.9 grains. First loading showed normal case stretch. Trimmed them back to 2.008. Book says 2.005 minimum and 2.015 max. 2nd firing produced virtually no case...

    SASS with 1.624 headspace...go figure.

Just got a New DPMS .308 SASS. So I load 50 rounds of new winchester brass with H4895, SMK 168's, CCI-BR2 Primers. Loaded in .3 grain increments for 3 rounds each from 39 to 43 grains to do a ladder test. Before I loaded the brass, I checked each with a hornady gauge. Average headspace was...

Rifle Scopes Pros & Cons of Going totally metric

If a sniper were to go totally metric-that is, he used meters for laser ranging, centimeters for calculating elevation/windage adjustments, and a centimeter-increment scope-he would theoretically operate a higher efficiency than a counterpart using a combination of mils, meters and minutes of...
