Your thoughts on stepping up from .308 to .300WM

That is exactly why I started shooting in FTR competitions at 1K. I wanted to learn to read the wind. It has taken awhile, but it is worth it IMO. I highly recommend it. Another benefit of FTR is barrel life. Edit: welcome to long range shooting... :)

Your thoughts on stepping up from .308 to .300WM

My recommendation to you would be based entirely on what you are personally trying to accomplish. first I am Not sure what you mean when you say you qualified for your club's 600 yard match. it sounds like you had to shoot a Tyro (qualifying round) of some kind in order to be allowed to...

    Resize loaded ammo ?

Would you take the firing pin out of a 1911, chamber a round and point it at your head?

    155 or 185 for 308 to 1k

If its a 1/12 twist, I doubt you will be able to adequately stabilize the 185's. http://www.bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/

    Resize loaded ammo ?

I've been reloading ammo for more than 40 years. I've never done the thing described, and I never will. I will pull them apart before I do that. No offense, but...wow. So you're going to chamber a round pointed at your head? Or at the poor slob in the apartment above you?

    F T/R Competition F T/R build sequence question.

The more "custom" your rifle becomes, the more single-purpose it also becomes. If money is no object, and you want a custom FT/R rifle, there are several people who would be very happy to build one for you. The high-dollar single shot custom actions are probably, for such a project, a good...

When to use an expander mandrel; is it even necessary?

It's not just about runout, it's also about neck tension. Afaik neck tension inconsistency is prevented by a) regular annealing and b) neck turning, in addition to neck brushing and, for me, use of an expander die. At 1000 yards it matters.

    F T/R Competition 3-5Oct14 Long Range Championship @ Camp Butner ( N.C.)

Extremely interesting conditions all weekend long at Butner this weekend...the range threw nearly everything except the kitchen sink at us. Fun! Edit: I don't know if there are any new shooters reading this, but Butner IMO was very challenging this weekend and I encountered more than one...

New guy with new gun questions

This isn't mentioned often but I'll mention it: it is my understanding that you want the scope to be reasonably close to center at the elevation / range you will be shooting at most. Do not buy too much +MOA in a base, if doing so will make you crank the scope all the way down for most of your...

McRee / AICS magazine feed issue WITH PIC!!

um.....perhaps I spoke too soon, the feed lips on my .308 5 rounders are .395" and .403" respectively, and my ten rounders are all between .405" and .410". My mags are all AI marked. The feed lips being too narrow would definitely hold the round too low. I still wouldn't bend them...

McRee / AICS magazine feed issue WITH PIC!!

Perhaps the thread should be titled "McRee chassis feeding issue with AICS magazines"? I would think it entirely possible that the chassis is mis-positioning the mags.

    Questions about zero consistency.

Go this this web site: JBM - Calculations - Trajectory (Drift) pick your bullet, give it a reasonable starting velocity, and then scroll down to the bottom and click "calculate". The program assumes a 100 yard zero. Now, change the temperature only by 25 degrees or so, and see what happens...

    GAP Non-Typical: 6.5 SAUM or 300 WSM?

.300WSM is (reportedly) hot right now in F Open, and it is being used to push 230 Bergers really hard, and I suspect you'll find lots of current info about loading for it. I have a .300WSM which I had been using a few years ago with Berger 210VLDs at 2775 fps (not hot by today's hotness...

Maybe I should stay the hell out of this thread, but you posted this looking for opinions. I think you are setting yourself up for some messy results. Brian Litz's new book describes taking a statistical approach to solving ballistic questions, as opposed to a deterministic one. This...

When to use an expander mandrel; is it even necessary?

I use a bushing die and have different bushings for different brass brands. In spite of this, and routinely annealing case necks, I still experience differences in force required to seat bullets. I have begun neck turning, and even in neck turned cases I feel a difference. Thus, I use an...

5R milspec barrel vs match grade barrel

I can't tell you what is the right answer for you, but I can tell you how I've always approached the "when to spend money" decision. When I can tell the quality of my equipment is holding me back from accomplishing what I want, I buy better equipment. When I can't get the equipment I...

    On the edge of insanity!!

Neck tension. My vertical at 1k diminished noticeably when I started annealing and using an expander die on all sized cases. Group sizes shrank when I started using a neck bushing die. You said that seating bullets in fired resized cases was hard. Too much neck tension, and you must solve...
