Next time just weld a nut to the end of the bolt/stud from the git-go and save yourself all that frustration and tool sacrifices.
BTW, you didn't really lose anything by welding that spiral flute easy out to the bolt.
Personally I much prefer the tapered square version myself, all those spiral...
