    Quenching after annealing?

    Quenching brass does not make it harder like it does steel. Ive done both with similar results... minus drying the cases when using water.

    My current fps is 2628 out of federal brass. Ive been using 45.0 but when I switched from federal to lapua brass for my 600 yard load I actually had to drop .5 grain powder to keep same accuracy.

    Ive asked a few questions about these rounds but really haven't heard from anyone that tried it in a 20" barrel. My 168 smk work pretty good at 600 but of course are useless at 1k. If anyone has tried these I'd love to hear your results. thanks

    Causes of spread in fps ?

    Ok I will fire form first and yes using powder thrower and beam scale. I did look at past chrino speeds using federal brass and was getting about 40 fps in 10 shot average.. I thought it was as bad with the old federal brass I used but I guess I was wrong glad I wrote it down..lol

    Brass is new or was I should say..lapua. Yes all from same box. Neck tension is consistent two and half thousandths. Measured every shell. I did uniform primer pockets when I de primed. I suppose it could be the Chrono.

    I guess one more thing I noticed.. After firing 15 rounds 44.0 being my best overall group at 600 yards 1moa. 4 of the 5 were sub, The brass from the fired 15 rounds was actually shorter than the new brass that is unfired? I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here. Measured with RCBS case...
