    bbl.Twists ?

Digressing slightly, but I’ll note some historical info regarding this statement. Yes and no. The exception were the quasi-exotic SOCOM/Crane-built M14 sniper rifles circa 1990-2012, plus some other “boutique” M14 rifles used by a few Army units. They used 1/10 twist barrels exclusively, but...

    bbl.Twists ?

That is possible, but the Remington archives show that Remington tested “multiple twist rates” back in 1986-87 in order to achieve the Army’s technical specification regarding accuracy. The archives don’t specify the various twist rates that were tested, but the Army did not dictate the twist...

clip slot and thumb cut relief

I’m not a machinest and thus I am not an expert, but since you are openly asking for opinions, here’s mine. Below is my vintage Remington 40-X repeater with a factory clip slot that was reportedly made in the 1969-70 era based on its serial number. Please note the two small “semi-circular” cuts...

    Lets see your USMC M40-M40A6!!!

Putting together pieces for an early “Big hook” M40a3. I still need an E-prefix receiver, DD Ross scope rail and M24 trigger, but its getting closer:

    M40's and MIRS rails

I will only add some chronological info: The M40A3s were built at Quantico and generally first fielded in the 2001-02 era. They were updated via Change Orders a couple of times during that decade. Those USMC/PWS Change Orders didn’t include installing a MIRs rail. The original MIRs rail was a...

    Mk 13 Mod 0 stock

Real deal USMC M40A1s that were pulled out of the PWS arms room for a match at Quantico back in 2016. Only the tan one in last picture is part of my collection (built at PWS years ago).

    Mk 13 Mod 0 stock

Well, in addition to Navy SEAL rifles made at Crane since the 1980s-90s, make sure you never look at the bottom metal bolts on USMC sniper rifles made at Quantico, VA since about 1978 - all those “ugly” action bolts might offend… …maybe this old 1981 article on the above USMC sniper rifles...

    Mk 13 Mod 0 stock

Crane used heavy duty Allen head bolts instead of regular Remington action screws, including the threaded recoil lug which also used a bolt. I need those three parts, as my stock was missing them, but it’s no biggie once cut to proper length.

    Mk 13 Mod 0 stock

This one is getting closer, still need a few things: old Leupold Ultra rings and the action bolts, but hope to send it off to Red Bull soon, for Chris to finish later this year or early 2026. Early grey stock from 1990s is underneath the tan paint. Unique recoil lug seen here (Badger Ordnance...

Need help to identify a scope case

I agree based on the “Mk 18 Mk 1” stamp: https://captainstevens.com/military/weapons/snipers/canadian-r-e-l-sniper-scopes-cases/

    M40a1 build guide

FWIW, here’s the only picture I know of with the Widefield scope being used on an M40A1. (One can see the oblong front objective bell that is flat on the top and bottom surface). I vaguely recall reading that this staged picture was used for a USMC recruitment poster, but that’s just something...

    M40a1 build guide

Maybe cplnorton can look in the archives one day for more info. My understanding: they are briefly mentioned in two books as evaluation scopes that Redfield provided to the USMC in the late 1970s when they were updating the M40 to the M40A1 configuration. Your scope is the 5th one that I have...

CMP vintage sniper competition rifle M40 gunsmith.

Tony Ben is in Florida. He has focused on the M14 platform for years, but might be able to assist with your project. He is building his own M40 replica for the CMP events, and has a good reputation with his customers...

    Army M24 Build Thread

Recently completed my M24-ish replica, but used my extra RR-prefix short action. Previous owner of the short action HS Precison stock had actually painted it to mimic my M24R take-off stock. So I couldn’t resist. Shoots well, and will allow less barrel wear on my M24R, as I intend to shoot the...

    Parker Hale M-85 Build

May I ask what parts you have acquired for your “bitsa” M85 build? If you are using an M85 receiver you are automatically limited to the odd-ball P-H M85 scope mount. Do you have an M85 stock w/ the odd-ball bipod “spigot” mounting rod for the odd-ball P-H/Versa-Pod bipod? What about the...

    Mk 13 Mod 0 stock

Frank Greene noted that 3 different chambers were used by the military on the 300 WinMag rifles (each differed from SAMMI spec). Here’s my random question regarding the freebore on Mk 13 chambers. When Crane went from the Mk 248 Mod 0 chamber (190 grain SMK) to the Mk 248 Mod 1 chamber (220...

    U.S. Army/Navy/USMC M14-based sniper and DMR/SDM rifles circa late-1960s to late 201Xs

    U.S. Army/Navy/USMC M14-based sniper and DMR/SDM rifles circa late-1960s to late 201Xs

During the pandemic I purchased 600 of the old Lake City M118 projectiles. My son weighed them for me one weekend. Most weighed b/t 172.8 and 173.8, with two nodes at 173.1 and 173.5. This weight variance is not conducive to long range accuracy….no idea what year these were made but presumably...

2025 project: poor man’s M24ish and an M40 replica for CMP matches.

Replica M24ish basically finished and has now been tested. (Just need to refinish and add the Redfield rear sight base for iron sights). Shoots well enough for me, mostly correct aside from M700 short action (RR prefix) and the scope rings. Barrel is a Kreiger M24 profile SS, 1/11.25 twist, 5R...

Parker Hale M85 replica - Mission Impossible?

I’m not visualizing exactly what you are referring to in that sentence. I will need to research that aspect, but again, I’ll have to defer to my machinest buddy re that procedure for the bolt abutments. This is where I wish there was a local M85 to inspect. Thanks for offering to ask Norman...
