Short Barrel, Short Range Elk Rifle

I thought you said you wanted a short barrel? I’ve got a 16” 308 that drives 178’s fast enough to keep them in stable flight to at least 1000 yards. I’m sure it will kill any “big bull” I may get an opportunity at. For 300 yards or less you could sbr that thing and run a 12.5” barrel and still...

    PSA: stolen tubes

I looked around and didn’t see a thread about this. There’s a lengthy thread on arfcom about a guy selling stolen ANVIS tubes to LOTS of people via the equipment exchange. He was thought to be a reputable seller and was in good standing for years...

    Best Rimfire Suppressor Host?

M&P 22 compact for pistol. Eats anything you feed it. Pretty quiet and lightweight. Not sure about rifle.

    16-18 inch shorty rifles

I wouldn’t hesitate on the savage if budget is a main concern. Get a few tools and you can do the whole thing yourself. Pull the barrel, have it cut and threaded, reassemble. Go shoot things. Done.

    16-18 inch shorty rifles

From barrel tip to recoil pad it’s right about 35”. That could vary, of course, based on a shooters individual LOP.

    Gunsmithing Another savage bolt thread..

Actually, no. I just resized half a dozen loaded rounds and cycled them. They chamber and eject very smoothly now. I’m going to resize what I’ve got loaded here and head to the range when I get a chance to see how they group. Resizing seems to affect OAL a bit so I’ll prob have to retrim and...

    Gunsmithing Another savage bolt thread..

Ok, so I adjusted my Redding body die down until it bumped the shoulder just enough to allow smooth chambering. Way better than before. The bolt still lifts easily, but needs a little jerk to start it moving rearward to eject the brass. Better than it was before resizing, but still needs some...

    Gunsmithing Another savage bolt thread..

Makes sense. I’ll mess around with sizing some if the brass first. I’ve been meaning to buy another 100 pieces anyway so I’ll start with some fresh stuff. Now that I’m thinking about it, the force to move the bolt rearward wasn’t always this much. Definitely could be related to brass growing...

    Gunsmithing Another savage bolt thread..

Great write up! Much clearer now what primary extraction is. I understand the purpose of the baffle and how it works with the bolt handle to achieve PE. Another thought just occurred to me, perhaps this is something of a reloading issue, too?...I shoot lapua brass, I’m on my 5th or 6th firing...

    Gunsmithing Another savage bolt thread..

The extraction timing issue sounds like what I’m experiencing. But I’m not sure I understand all that you’re describing. Is there a video or graphic representation of what you’re talking about anywhere on the internets you could link to? I’m still unsure what a baffle is.

    Gunsmithing Another savage bolt thread..

Not sure about bolt compatibility with older parts. What is the front baffel? Do you mean the raised metal portions in the receiver that the lugs on the bolt head lock into?

    Gunsmithing Another savage bolt thread..

I’ve searched for my answer, but can’t find it so here goes.. I’ve got a savage 10 chambered in 308. Shoots great, I like the rifle. I can’t afford another precision type gun so this ones it for me. I have time to tinker and like to mod things (to a certain extent). I recently started trying...

    16-18 inch shorty rifles

I used Morgan Richey of class 3 machining. He’s in TX and I’m in CO. He charged me $85 to cut, thread, and ship it back. Turnaround was about a week iirc and he communicated very well. Barrel shoots as good as it did before I sent it and he didn’t mar it, although I’m not picky about that stuff...

Savage model 10 chambered in 308 Chopped the factory 20” down to 16.25” XLR element chassis Vortex pst gen 16-24 Griffin armament sportsman taper mount I like it, no regrets. Very handy, still shoots 178 amax over 4064 lights out. Both pics are of the 16.25” barrel, with and without can for...

    Gunsmithing Xlr folding adapter installation

Anybody put one on themselves? I think I’m going to order one to go with my 16” barrel to make a super compact rig. Xlr doesn’t have any instruction listed on their website. If you’ve done an install on one, how did it go? Anything complicated?

    Night Vision PSA: stolen tubes

I’m not sure if these guys are being serious or just jerking my chain now. The memes are kind of chuckle inducing, I’ll admit that. Here’s a question though: Are the folks who are suggesting we lie to investigators about this stuff using the PX here? Seems counter to the culture of...

    Night Vision PSA: stolen tubes

Not sure what a Tory is, but probably not. Btw, the contraction that you meant to use is “you’re”.

    Night Vision PSA: stolen tubes

Uh yea, see post above. Perhaps this is humor or internet bravado...but would you guys seriously put yourself in a position to become the target of a federal investigation? Over $1500 in gear? I seriously doubt it. The agents have been very direct in their questioning about how we acquired the...

    Night Vision PSA: stolen tubes

Lie to an investigator over $1200 in tubes? Not me man. Not even close to worth it.

    Night Vision PSA: stolen tubes

Maybe. I’m not sure how much NV gear gets dealt at your average gun show, though.
