As long as the thread fit is pretty close in tolerance, those threads are fine...

    Gunsmithing Chatter on barrel threads

I use a 12x36 Grizzly and don't have chatter problems with threads. Sharp bit, lots of oil and light cuts should help big time. Keep tool and tenon overhang at a minimum...

    Gunsmithing PTG change order fee?

I hear you! I ordered something awhile ago and it came last week. NOT what I ordered! I called to return it and have yet to get a call back with return instructions and what.they are.going to do in regards to getting me the right item. The girls taking orders really need to know more about...

    Gunsmithing PTG change order fee?

Well, if your order is in any machining stages, this is where the charge comes from. At this point, it costs money to make changes, depending where its at and/or how they do their machining operations. Understandable in my book...

    Gunsmithing First Muzle brake.

I fixed a Vias brake install that was done buy, an "in business" gunsmith and it was a pitiful job. The threads where so undersized that the brake slipped over the first three threads before catching! The tenon shoulder was not square. The brake had gap when tight. The OD was barely touched...

    Gunsmithing First Muzle brake.

.020 over is optimum for clearance and accuracy. .010 over is .005 per side...that pretty close. You might need to use some copper cleaner on your brake if its not absolutely perfect. lol. I use a Grizzly carbide shank boring bar to bore all mine. The min bore on it is .236 and works pretty...

Gunsmithing When the bore absolutely, positively has to be copper free...

I don't care for KG stuff. Boretech carbon cleaner for carbon, Wipeout +accelerator for copper. TM works well on copper too. Run some Iosso down in between. After cleaned, run a patch of 50/50 mix of Hoppes and Kroil down. Run a dry patch or two before shooting. Also, swab out your chamber...

Gunsmithing Help me find an Indicator

Jason, I got the same two Noga bases...they are great. Both are outfitted with Interapids...very nice stuff. I had self control last night and ordered nothing, lol. Had I known earlier in the day, I'm sure I would have found something to order...

Gunsmithing Help me find an Indicator

CL app and CL notify by trixiesoft. That enco deal is pretty good. They don't offer 30% much. I DID NOT get that one emailed to me.

Gunsmithing Help me find an Indicator

Keep an eye on your local craigslist. Get a smartphone app and set up a couple alerts for what you are looking for. A couple months ago I picked up a Interapid 312b-3 DTI with box for $80 cash. Couldn't believe it till I saw it. It works perfect. Before that, I picked up a B&S 50 millionth...

    Gunsmithing Chuck shopping

Picked up a very nice Bison 6-1/4" Set Tru 3 Jaw off eBay with a D1-4 back plate. Got it for $450 plus $12 shipping! Its used and in great condition. This one was made in Poland. I tore it all down and cleaned and lubed it. Got it all set up and dialed in. Dialing it in was quick and super...

Gunsmithing Help me find an Indicator

The BS is much more fragile. I have a BS .00005 with a longer stem that works pretty good. If I had to pick, Interapid all the way....

Gunsmithing Carbon buildup on crown vs. accuracy?

The new GM top cleaner is garbage. If you can find the older stuff, it works. Bore tech carbon cleaner works pretty good. I find that a crown with a smooth finish cleans up very easy. I cut with a sharp HSS bit at high speed. Makes a real nice finish...

Gunsmithing Help me find an Indicator

Interapid definitely. Do the enco deal for 20% off $199 purchase for a smoking deal. They usually run a 30% deal, but haven't seen it this year so far. They do 20% and free shipping with no minimum several times...

Gunsmithing Stock barrel after truing action?

It can certainly be done, but why would you? You will gain absolutely nothing by doing the action work and then stick the same crummy factory barrelback on. I'd definitely save up another $300-$350 and use a high quality barrel. In the meantime, shoot what you have.

Gunsmithing How are barrels marked by custom small shops?

Some high tech fancy stuff here. Here is my simple, no frills marking system. I use a 130 degree diamond drag. I can do barrels, dies, stubs and anything flat that fits in the compound vise. The barrel pictured below is a scrap barrel that I used to practice on. Take a little coordination...

Gunsmithing How are barrels marked by custom small shops?

I have a New Hermes pantograph. I actually just got it set and and operational to engrave barrels and dies with it. It uses a 130 degree diamond drag to engrave with. Does a pretty nice job.

Sounds like a pretty good deal. I'm looking for a 3 jaw too, but looking for an adjustable Bison, Buck or PBA.
