    Gunsmithing .280 AI SAAMI questions

I've been doing some reading and I am a little confused about a few things about the .280 AI. There are 2 different versions of the .280 AI? There is the traditional .280 AI which will not fire form factory .280 brass, and the .280 AI SAAMI which can fire form brass using factory .280? Do you...

    Wobbly pilot in case trimmer

I'm new to reloading and have not seen what a case trimmer is suppose to look like. But yesterday when I turned on my RCBS universal case trimming station for the first time, I noticed that some of the bits do not rotate perfectly. Are they suppose to? When they rotate they slightly wobble. From...

Advanced Marksmanship How do you calculate wind correction without a ballistic calculator?

I've been reading a book called Reading wind for the rifle shooter, so I believe that I understand the basics on how wind correction is suppose to be done. However, so far in the book it doesn't address ballistic coefficient, bullet velocity, or basically anything about a custom load. I'm most...

calibrating quickload to real velocity question. OBT

In an optimum barrel time article it says that you need to first calibrate your quickload velocities to match measured velocities for a variety of loads by tweeking burn rate and bullet weight. How many different loads does somebody need to match up before saying it's good? I'm guessing 4 or 5...

    Max load questions.

Why do people want to go for maximum loads? I mean, maximum loads are not necessarily the most accurate load? Secondly, how far do you back off your loads after seeing the first signs of over pressure? Only reason I could think why someone would want to go for maximum load over maximum accuracy...

    Stupid COAL and CBTO question.

I have not reloaded very much, how constant is the CBTO after seating multiple bullets? I'm guessing the CBTO is constant and the COAL is variable. I guess my real question is does a die seat a bullet to CBTO or COAL?

How important is the shoulder measurement?

I'm guessing you can have two cases with the same maximum case length, but have two different shoulder measurements. Is that possible after resizing brass?

    CBTO, COAL, concentricity. relate how?

I'll just define them first to make sure I got them right. CBTO - cartridge base to ogive COAL - cartridge overall length concentricity - the consistency of the ogive surface. How do I respect all three? Do you try to sort out cartridges that are most similar in all 3? Pull and throw out the...

    No Berger bullets in Quickload

I think there may have been one available, but what I need is 168 grain Berger Hunting VLD. What now? I thought I saw that someone can add bullets to the list, if anyone has done it yet.

    Calling a bullet by it's manufacturer's name

Would it sound stupid to call bullets, Bergers or Amax instead of bullets?

Gunsmithing Taking apart an atlas bipod.

I have the intention of cerakoting an atlas bipod, and I have to take it apart to do that. Is it as simple as unscrew, rescrew everything? Or are there factors like torc lbs for the screws or risk of damage?

    Gunsmithing Question about black paint.

The gun I am interested in painting has a stainless steel barrel, and people say the rifle would look best if the barrel was just painted black. How much different does a black painted barrel look from the standard black metal? Would I have to repaint all the black components black so that the...

    Gunvise for load development?

How good of an idea is it to use a gun vise when working up a load? Gun vise might not be the right description for those bench rest vises.

Advanced Marksmanship How do you manage recoil?

This might belong to the stupid marksmanship section, but some of the details do not seem that basic. A few days ago I discovered that I wasn't managing my recoil correctly off of a bench using a 308. So the next day I spent about 300 .22 rounds trying to figure out where I was going wrong...

Advanced Marksmanship Catching ejected brass questions.

I watched a video where a guy was using a swept handle bolt, and he caught the ejecting brass at the same time as ejecting the brass. He did it by putting his hand in front of the bolt knob and pulling the bolt back with the back of his thumb while catching the brass with his fingers. First...

What's the bullet length of a .22 lr?

I can't seem to find the measurement anywhere and I don't know if it's safe to pull one out of a cartridge with pliers. If you need to know the bullet type it's a 40 grain m22 Winchester 22 lr, it is not hollow point.
