Gunsmithing Nothing better than finding the perfect tooling!

Does your toolholder have changeable seats? I know tpi is prob mostly 16 but if you need to do coarser or finer you might need to change the helix angle of the insert to have correct side clearance. Most toolholders are set to 1.5 deg which is good from 1.0 to 2.0 deg range. To figure out what...

Gunsmithing AR15--accuracy difference on reciever\handguard interface

OK, how bout another question. Are they more repeatable as far as keeping zero? I remember a famous Nam era sniper saying he would rather have a so-so shooting rifle that held zero than a more accurate rifle that did not.

    Gunsmithing LR-308 barrels ???

Sorry, when I see somebody use LR-308 I assume they are DPMS factory barrels. At least you're able to cast chambers and know what you have. I don't think there are that many people doing that. I use a 308 match reamer but only for myself or if requested.

    Gunsmithing LR-308 barrels ???

I would hope that more expensive barrels would have better chambers compared to the Dpms types so you get what you pay for? I'm sure the high volume mfgs want less problems(high pressure signs, etc) so they make them big and state that their barrels may or may not shoot well.

    6.5x284 with h1000 vs 6.5saum

I have a 27" Lilja 3-Groove 6.5-284 on a Tikka M595 Master Sporter. Haven't shot it much but tried a RL17 load with Berger 140s and it was over 3000 fps at 50 grains. That was too hot as bolt lift was a little stiff but damn did it shoot. Don't know about throat life though. As much as I...

    Gunsmithing PTG barrel fluting cutter

Prob depend on how solid your barrel setup is for feed rate and depth of cut. Not sure how you can set a specific feed rate for a bridgeport type power feed though. Might want to ask PTG what they like for surface speed. That type of setup I usually go by how it sounds and feels and what the...

Gunsmithing Mother load muzzel brake testing

Sorry Bubb didn't notice the videos. I looked for a test link on the side and scrolled down a ways but not to the bottom obviously. I am new so my post was delayed(didn't see your watch video post) I would suggest they add a link on the side to get a little more action from people w ADD. I...

Gunsmithing Lathe Chatter; using PTG action jig for tenon/chambering.

If the contour is running concentric to the bore, let her rip. It's amazing what will shoot good. I set back a couple of factory rem700 308's and the chamber on one was out .007". Set back .150" IIRC to 308 match and threaded/cleaned up the muzzles and they were more than happy with the...

    Gunsmithing Action truing fixture idea

Scotty, the receiver bore has to be on center and straight. That's why there are 2 adjustment screws on each side. The receiver OD probably is neither concentric nor parallel to the bore from the factory.

Gunsmithing Mother load muzzel brake testing

brakes I saw some claims but I didn't see any test data. I saw a test on popular 3-gun brakes where a laser and rolling base provided muzzle movement and rearward movement. It's fun to make your own though. Some work great some work OK. It's gets really cool when you get into 5 port brakes.

Gunsmithing Lathe Chatter; using PTG action jig for tenon/chambering.

So you dialed the bore to .0001" or so and the tailstock is only out by .0002" ??? Very nice. I see a little chatter on the minor of the threads but that's all I see. Unless you're gettin chatter on the thread walls I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe cut that fixture in half though. I've never...
