Best caliber for big game at 400 plus yards

For sure there are a lot of uncontrollable, unshootable lightweight super magnums out there that are just plain stupid (e.g. every factory Weatherby Mark V with those terrible stocks). But there are also a lot of really well thought out platforms that have good stock designs, sufficient weight...

Best caliber for big game at 400 plus yards

Elk hunting consists of a huge range of conditions and terrain, so it is difficult to make sweeping statements about a given cartridge's suitability. Especially at the ranges the OP is asking about. I don't think anyone would dispute that a 6mm can kill an elk in perfect conditions with a...

Best caliber for big game at 400 plus yards

You would be amazed how shootable a 12 lb 30 Nosler is with a TBAC 338 Ultra. It's a total pussycat that most people can shoot well. The can creates a very long, comfortable recoil impulse. I agree that ultra light magnums are very hard to shoot well.

Best caliber for big game at 400 plus yards

If you are serious about mastering ethical 400+ yard shots on an animal, then cartridge choice comes down to minimizing the wind call error on a cold bore shot. Drop is academic. A Kestrel is a useful but imperfect tool up high in elk country where the wind vectors are all over the place. A...

People ask me why I don't like Sig.......

This is a very enlightening thread, thanks OP. I was on the fence about an MPX, and this is great info that will sway my decision. Between this info and the 320 holocaust of a design, the current state of Sig makes me very sad. The P226 is still one of my all time favorite pistols, and my...

    300 Norma

I will leave it to someone smarter than me (Jim Borden?) to explain the technical limitations of a 1-1/16" tenon diamater action when used with .590 bolt face cartridges, but here is some real world experience. I've owned five different Norma/Lapua magnums: I've had two 300 Norma magnums on...

    Optics Advice for AR-15

I love a 3.5x ACOG for the use case you are describing. Super clear glass, and indestructible. ACOGs get overlooked with the current LPVO obsession. Everyone needs an AR with an ACOG.

300 Norma Magnum Build – Solid Setup or Would You Do It Differently?

I would also look at an improved chamber. Those 20 degree shoulders stretch like crazy. A 35-40 degree shoulder will be much more stable.

300 Norma Magnum Build – Solid Setup or Would You Do It Differently?

I would pick an action with 1-1/8" tenon diameter for any Lapua bolt face cartridge. Based on my experience with Norma magnums in Defiance actions, and comparing them to Borden Bigfoot/Surgeon XLs, the 1-1/16" tenon actions just can't take pressure like the beefier actions that were designed...

Area 419 Tactical One-Piece Scope Mount

Has anyone used the Area 419 mount with a TT315M? Any experience torquing to a full 18 in lbs on the scope which says don't exceed 15 in lbs?

    Ideal Backcountry Rifle weight?

3 pound scope?! Not sure why anyone would hunt with a Razor G3. You could easily shave off a pound and lose no capability.

Canadian Ranger rifles in the Arctic need replacements, don’t work in the cold

I always wondered why they didn't use something home grown. Like a CADEX R7, which is a hell of a nice rifle.

    Is a 1 in 7 twist too fast for a 7mm prc

There are other downsides to over twisting, like adding unnecessary torque to the rifle and making it subjectively more difficult to shoot.

    Sig 226 advice

I adore classic hammer fired Sigs, and the P226 is my all time favorite pistol. You have great taste. The best version IMO is the Legion SAO. The trigger is phenomenal out of the box - very crisp, minimal creep, extremely short reset. It's not a 1911 trigger, but what is? I sent my pistol...

    Rifle Scopes Hunting Scope suggestions

I certainly agree that the TT and ZCO are tops in every category - they are just way outside the OP's price range. That is why I recommended the ATACR. Sounds like we have very similar taste in optics.

    Rifle Scopes Hunting Scope suggestions

I collect scopes like others collect watches. Variety is interesting. My hunting rifles currently wear: TT315M ATACR 4-16x42 Swarovski Z8i 2-16x50 S&B Polar 3-12x54 ZCO420 They will all meet your criteria. The ATACR is an incredible value, and is probably the one that will most easily be...

talk me outta a MOA scope….😳

The mil vs MOA debate is missing the point of this thread. It's a fucking tangent theta for 60% off. Those scopes never get discounted. Even if you hate MOA for whatever reason, tangent theta glass is worth major consideration. Not to mention the prospect of flipping that scope for a big...

talk me outta a MOA scope….😳

One of the best scopes in the world for a 60% discount? I would find a home for it, MOA be damned.
