I think the manufacturers are catching up!
I stopped into a local retailer today and saw several Bushmaster patrol carbines and Rock River carbines, all with the stepped barrels, for $815.00! 7 M1As-(still pricey but not absurdly), and at least 10 Mini-14s in .223, 7.62x39 and 6.8 all for under $750.00.
