I want to rebarrel my 06 with a 11 twist 24" barrel. Also, I want to shoot 208 amax's from 600 to 1000. Would a 11 twist be a good idea for this bullet? What are your thoughts on a 24" barrel for these ranges? I would like to keep the tube as short as possible for handling without giving up too much performance. Anyone with any experience with this type of combo please chime in.
Thanks much,
B

Re: 1:11 twist 30-06 with 208 amax?

I'd go 1/10 twist if choosing a barrel.

But, my 1/12 twist 308 stabilizes them. I have to believe they are right on the edge.

24" bbl should yield 2700-2750 fps with the 208s pretty easily. I'm using 22.5" on my 30-06, getting 2700 fps with RL22, or RL17, and that makes it to 1000 yards quite handily, about 27 moa here at 4500'.

Re: 1:11 twist 30-06 with 208 amax?

My bro has a 12 twist in 308 also, and it shoots well but prob on that "edge" of stabilization that is spoken of. That is why I was thinking 11 would be a good number for the 208's. I know that the ten twist would have no problem with the 208 as I am running that now. But, what I have gathered that the slowest twist for the max bullet wieght is the best for performance (so I've read). I was thinking the 10 twist was for heavier (longer) bullets than the 208. Maybe I'm mistaken? Any other thoughts? Or should j just go with the "norm"

The twist actually is a function of barring surface more than weight. Typically heavier bullets are longer thus having more barring surface. Berger VLD's are sleek in design reducing the barring surface. This is why you can find their recomended twists a bit slower than the norm for a particular weight.
