Hey guys, I went and shot my 10/22 today and like usual it was a shotgun. I'm thinking the stock pencil barrel is a POS and want to replace it. Is the below 'Green Mountain Barrel Ruger 10/22 22 Long Rifle .920" Diameter 1 in 16" Twist 20" Stainless Steel' any good? I would pretty much only shoot bulk Walmart .22

I also need to upgrade my 300lb trigger can somebody point me towards a CHEAP (less than $50) lightweight trigger or some trick to lighten the pull a little?

This is just a plinker/prairie dog'r thus the budget.

Thanks guys!

I've heard nothing but good reviews on Green Mountain. I have one but haven't built the rifle yet so can't comment just yet.

As far as triggers go, I used a Hornet in one of mine and it's a great deal for the money. It's not a Kid, Volquartsen, etc. but it also didn't cost that much either. There's lots of good info on triggers and DIY methods on Rimfire Central.

Check rimfirecentral.com for Ruger 10/22 stuff. They have a tutorial on stoning/polishing your stock trigger. A little work and YOU can reduce it down to 2.5-4 lb for almost free.

I shoot bulk Walmart stuff mostly. At 50yds or less, you probably won't see a huge difference in the stock barrel. Shooting 100+ yards, you will definately need to change ammo and consider a new barrel. A new barrel MAY tighten up your groups with bulk ammo, but buying better ammo will probably tighten up groups using your stock barrel, and cost you less.

I bought a Power Custom adjustable trigger, hammer, adjustable sear (@$94) and really like the results.

Good luck

Re: 10/22 needs a new barrel and trigger advice please

Volquartsen has some SICK barrels. I have a rifle basix trigger in my marlin 917vr. I love it. Don't know if they make one for the 10/22 though. Not that I am recommending this, but I had a .22 where I swapped the spring in the trigger for one from a pen. I estimated that it had about 5 - 7 ounces of pull. I had another rifle where I cut the spring about 1/8" shorter, and then stretched it out to the same length. It was definitely lighter but I can't really remember how much. Again, these are things I have done in the past. I can't say that I am recommending them. If you choose to modify your trigger yourself, it is best to have a weight tester just to make sure you are keeping safe. Good luck!

I used the power custom parts in my trigger that was 7.5 before and 2.5 after. I traded the gun for a savage but kept the parts. (the dealer wouldn't give me anymore for the trigger work) I would make ya a deal if interested.

And as far as triggers you can get the power custom kit from Midway that will give you a good smooth trigger pull as any for around your budget price. I have a couple of the kits in use and have another on order. Here's the link.

I second one of these kits. I have these parts in my 10/22 and the results were like night and day. Makes a big difference.
