1000 yards with mosin nagant? anyone?

Re: 1000 yards with mosin nagant? anyone?

It's possible, the 7.62x54R is similar to a .30-06 in it's capabilities. Get a good scope, it will take around 40MOA to get you to 1000.

As far as the load, I'd start with a 180SMK over IMR4350, and try to get it up to 2650 ft/s if you can safely.

Some local guys occasionally hold an "Axis vs Allies" shoot which ends with a 3' gong at 1000 yards. You advance a round as long as you hit it. This is done with no mods to the surplus gear and irons only.

Re: 1000 yards with mosin nagant? anyone?

Do you know what bore diam. you have on this rifle? All my MN's have had .310-.314 bores.

That being said, the full length rifle with H4350 or RL19 should get you out there pretty well with 178 Amax's or 190 SMK's.

If you have an oversize bore, try looking at the 303 Brit bullets. Even if they have lower BC's, they'll fly straighter if the bore fits properly than a high BC bullet with a poor fit.

If you seriously want to attempt this, I'd suggest a new barrel and have it headspaced so that it headspaces on the shoulder with about 0.001-0.002" of clearance to the rim.

I've cleaned beer bottles @ 250-300y with milsurp 147's and BLC-2 using iron sights. I have a receiver that I cobbled together a scope mount for (not a clamp on version) and it was surprisingly accurate, easily a MOA shooter at 100y when the barrel was free floated.

I haven't tried to bed the stock yet, but maybe I should look into that at some point.

Too many projects, not enough time/money...

Re: 1000 yards with mosin nagant? anyone?

I had a finnish Nagant with a 308" bore. I was loading Varget with 155gr SMK "palma" bullets. It was better than I expected grouping around MOA at 968yds. I'm selling that barrel off as I had a new one installed and it's now a 260rem which really shoots!

Re: 1000 yards with mosin nagant? anyone?

The 7.62x54R seems to like a 175-180gr bullet and IMR-4064. I'd jusdge its performance capability to be slightly more than the .308, and rather a bit less than the '06.

Using around 47.0gr (47.1 is the Sierra max) and the 175SMK, the cartridge performed well for me and my Son-in-Law in the Tokarev SVT-40 and Finn M-39 Military Arsenal/Sako-reworked Mosin-Nagant. Watch your pressures.

Our bores appeared well suited to .308 projectiles, but that's not always the case, and sometimes bullets sized for the .303 will work better.

The quickest way to find out is to try the .308's first, and if stellar accuracy can't be had at 100yd, try moving up to the .303's bullets. Download and watch pressures at first.

There's no cut and fast rule saying .308's won't shoot well in a .311/.312 bore, but properly sized bullets are always better. The rifle is the final judge.

For anything 500yd or under, using bullets heavier than 147-155 is not necessary.
