Hello,
I am new the thread. I am thinking about rebuilding my savage Stevens 300 win mag to a 338edge. Good idea or bad one? I would really love your opinions
thank you

Re: 1000 yrd project

Why not just stick with the 300 win mag? It's more than ample to get you out to 1000 yards and beyond. My 300 win mag can stay supersonic out to just a bit over 1800 yards, of course at my location and such.

With the 300 win mag, it's cheaper to shoot, better barrel life than the 338 edge. Now, if you just want an "Edge", then it's the want factor.... Just saying.

Re: 1000 yrd project

I agree with DesertHK. The 338 Edge is an awesome round, but the 300 win mag will get you past a mile and it is much cheaper then the 338 edge. Remember also that with wildcats such as the edge your price for everything goes up considerably. You also end up running through a good many barrel because you have to fireform the brass and that eats into barrel life.

Also think about this. While the Edge is a solid performer it is not the tell all end all of the 338 world or Long Rang shooting. Some of the other 338s make the edge look like a pea shooter and the 375s are even better.

Re: 1000 yrd project

You are right. I just don't like the stock of the stevens. I can get a new barrel and new stock have it all true for enexpensive. What do you think. Prob a 28 in hart or bartlien barel.

Re: 1000 yrd project

Unless you are doing BR shooting. Lugging a 28" barrel around is not my cup of tea. My 300 win mag has a 26" barrel with a FTE muzzle brake. Bartlein 1:10" MTU contour flutted. Wait is long but it's a shooter for sure. Of course, made possible by GAP.

Why do you have to fire form edge brass? It would cost just as much as a normal Ultra Mag.

I don't know anyone selling preformed brass for the Edge. I might have missed something but last I knew all the brass was formed out of 300 RUM brass.

But regardless of how you get the brass you still will burn more powder and burn through barrels faster. Thus cost goes up.

Re: 1000 yrd project

Bill you are right I do just want the edge. But i have to be realistic I don't have the funds to just throw away. I know that the 300 will do everything I want with exception of 2000 yrd but I am way far from that.
Longrange 338 the reason that you have to fire form the brass is no one makes it and I would have to expand the 300 rum case to fit a 338 bulllet.
I would not mind lugging around a 28 in barrel here in idaho. We have slot of open country and I could get better velocity so I could shot the 210 bergers. Just a thought

Re: 1000 yrd project

Edge brass needs to be necked up from 300 RUM and no other forming needed. Not saying that you should go 338 EDGE the WM will work just fine. There is only a few calibers that can REALLY out shoot it long distance anyways. Longrange is right you might want to wait until you can get something that will be more suitable to what your doing. The major concern that needs looked at is bullets then you worry about how fast you can push them.

Re: 1000 yrd project

The Edge brass formed from 300 ultra does not have to be fireformed. Simply run a tapered 338 expander through the 300 brass then FL size load and shoot. There is usually .004-.005 runout on the first loaded rds but accuracy in my rifle is under 1moa first time through. Accuracy on once fired brass is REAL good.

Re: 1000 yrd project

The only reason that I was even considering the edge is becuse I could buy a svage Stevens 300 win mag for $200 and then my smith could build me an edge for $800. Which means I only have 1000 into my rifle. Enexpensive way to get a long range canon. Maybe I am dumb or just want one. Don't know I just think that it would be fun to have.

Re: 1000 yrd project

darrin give me a shout my smith can get you a edge built for way less than $800 if it is on a savage action. heck my 30" barrel with fat bastard brake and 8- 1/4 deep flutes was less than that and it is a shooter.

Re: 1000 yrd project

I've shot side by side and switched back and forth between my friends 6.5G and my 6mmART40.

We both noticed that we had to put in a fair amount more windage for the 6.5G.They were 123's at 2580 fps.6mmART40 was with 105 JLK's .54bc at 2900 fps.

Yes it can be done just like it can be done with a 308 but IMO...There's better choices for shooting at 1000Y

Re: 1000 yrd project

Shot the 338/408 at 1000. Very similar to shooting a 308 at 400. This is one bad a-- rd. I cant wait to see if I can stand to shoot an eleven pounder chambered for this rd. If so Ill probably never use anything else.
