I watched this movie On Demand last night and thought it was pretty good. The movie details the survival experience of Aron Ralston who goes hiking in Canyonlands, and out of arrogance and negligence, fails to tell anyone his GOTWA plan. ::SPOILER:: He falls into a slot canyon and gets his arm pinned in by a boulder. After 5 days, he amputates his own arm and eventually makes it out.
Most people heard about the movie because it has some Oscar buzz. All in all, they told the story very well, especially when he realizes how his arrogance drove him to be trapped, alone, with no one looking for him in a remote Utah canyon. He always prided himself on being a hard-charger and an independent guy. While those traits can be virtuous, they also have their limitations if taken to the extreme. You can see the arrogance ebb out of him when he realizes he is in a predicament of his own making.
By the way, they show the amputation scene and some reviewers at Sundance actually had to go out and throw up. I didn't think the scene was that bad, but I also did a good bit of combat medicine during my deployment. Your families may find the scene a bit too much.
All in all, worth renting.
