Hey Fellas, I recently bought a Rem. 700 heavy barrel .308. I bought this mainly for the action, to build my custom rifle. When I measured the rate of twist it is a 13" twist!!!! I have never seen such a long rate of twist. I am building this to reach out to 600-800 yards (accurately). My gunsmith (Accurate Arms) said I would need to lower down to a 150-160grain bullet. What are yall's thoughts on this? What would you do:keep barrel and work with it, or ditch it?

What, I didnt know Remington used a 13 twist. I know 12 is there standard production and the custom shop uses 10 & 14 as well. I had a 40xb w/ a long 14 twist that was as accurate as anything out there. If it is a production line barrel I would scrap it but if its from a 40x you will be happy.

13 works well with the 155 Palma bullets from Sierra, should work with the Lapua also.

Load up some 155s and see how it shoots, might be pleasantly suprised at how well it does.

No offense to you or your abilities, but having seen this same issue come up in the past and knowing the outcome...are you SURE you patch-tested/measured it properly and that it isn't a 1:12?

I only ask because while a 1:13 barrel from the Remington custom shop isn't outside the realm of possibility...it would be a 1:5,000,000 shot if that.

If it is a 1:13, you'll likely be stuck with 155gr and lighter pills. Some Palma shooters run 1:13 twist barrels with the 155gr Lapua Scenars with good results. YMMV!! A 1:13 is a fine selection for a "hunting" rifle where you'll be sticking with 150gr and lighter bullets with muzzle velocities of 2900fps or so.

Thanks for the info guys. Ya I am sure. Its actually a 13.5 to be exact. I had my gunsmith measure it 2 different ways and we all got the same...How will this affect long range shots? Smaller bullet=less distance?

It all just depends on what distances you are talking about and what you need/want the bullet to do when it gets there. The 155gr Scenars, Bergers and SMK/Palma bullets are very good selections if longer range performance is what you seek with a slower twist barrel. The 155gr Scenars in my experience are good performers as long as you get the velocity up (which may or may not be do-able depending on the length of the barrel on your rifle...the Palma guys shooting these pills at 1k are running some LONG barrels to achieve repeatable, competitive-accuracy level 1k performance).

All you can do is try some 155gr pills from the rifle and see if the performance is what you want/need and go from there. Personally, I'd probably be looking to replace that slower twist barrel with something of at least a 1:11.25 or faster twist, but that's just me and my own personal bias toward not wanting to be pigeon-holed into ONLY using a very limited range of lighter bullets.

Re: 13" Twist for .308

a 1-14 twist was standard for the 308 in benchrest and hunter class with the 168 sierra mk. your 1-13 will be fine with most of the 155's and the 168 sierra for sure.

1:13 is the standard twist for Palma competition with 155 grain bullets. Of course keep it - and just use appropriate bullets.

Re: 13" Twist for .308

Longshot

I have a Krieger 1/13 twist on my Rem 700 and have had no issues with bullets up to the 175 SMK and Berger 175. In fact, check berger's web site and they recommend 1/13 for their 175's and lighter. The 155's really shine in a 1/13 so you really can't go wrong unless you really need to go heavier in bullet weight than 175, then it's time for a faster twist barrel. For shooting out to 600 like you mentioned, keep it and shoot it...there are plenty of bullets available that will shoot well in it.
