First off, I don't know all of the facts.
Second; I saw this on the local news stations and did not hear much about support for the DA and LEO in support of their actions, that said;
Apparently 2 boys around 13 years old were playing with a Nerf gun and low and behold, "You will shoot your eye out." did come to pass.
The kids freaked as the one was hit in the eye.
Probably no adults around so they called 911 to take care of the eye. Didn't want to be Ralfie with a BB gun.
The kid was checked out and no problems with his eye. Send him home and all will be OK.
No, here comes the DA and LEO and now the 13 year old boy is up on charges for shooting his friend. Felony charges no less.
The parents of the kid that was hit have tried to downplay all of this and said it was wrong to blow it up this way. Not a big thing. Completely in support of their son's best friend.
None the less, the single father of the boy who owned the gun had to take his boy into Juvenile Hall and turn him over for detention.
Good move, putting this boy in with the bad ass juvenile criminals. He was with them for a while and God only knows what went down.
Is there not a person that looks at things like this and doesn't say,"This just ain't right."
The news channels have dropped it now but I wonder where the case is.
On local radio there were lawyers offering to do this case pro-bono. Zero tolerance are the buzz words.
I think we need to adopt a zero tolerance policy for DAs and LEOs that persuade cases like this and waste the taxpayer's money.
What happened to the Cop that took you home and chewed on your ass and made you a better person? Ate on you to the point that you knew you would never do anything like that again and made you a better person clear through life?
I know you are out there and would give a ride home rather than destroying a life.
Just my thoughts, Regards FM
Probably got chewed up by liti-gators!!!
I also think this was resolved, but that doesn't hold anyone's feet to the fire, as should be done, and get people's attention and move bad people out and get better in.

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

There has to be more to this story. If not there is a severe lack of common sense wherever that incident took place.

My question to you is how was the boy still locked up if the parents of the victim didn't want to press charges and were "in support" of their son's best friend? Also felony charges? For a "Nerf gun" seriously?

As far as what happened to the friendly neighborhood cop who would give you a smack upside the head, a kick in the ass and a ride home to your folks? Complaints, bullshit lawsuits and parents who'll take the word of the punk kids over that of the police.

These days its better to just take them to jail and cover your ass instead of trying to do the right thing only to end up getting screwed with a complaint later on down the road.

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

Slapchop, Thanks for your input.
I agree that there is more to this than what I saw on TV and heard on the radio stations.
A SEVERE lack of common sense to say the least.
There has not been anything on the local news for a few days.
When it was going down, the news channels showed the boy and his father getting ready to send the kid to Juvvie.
The charges were, and don't quote me here, reported on the local news, as assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm, and anything else they could think of. numerous charges
My son, who lives in that jurisdiction and has a neighbor in LE, asked the LE neighbor about it after I called my son.
His neighbor had a few comments.
Damn, you would bring that up, the damnedest goat-fuck I have ever seen. Some kid reported it and the DA and a LEO that ran with it and now here we are with a thing that makes us all look like fools. All of them juveniles and not thinking.
I think that pretty well sums it up.
Doesn't build much confidence for a kid when you tell them that if there is trouble to call the cops.
I WILL follow up on this and post later, but it does look to me as if there was a big fuck-up and I don't expect anyone to be too forthcoming with info on this.
As I and our you would expect, "Our lips are sealed."
Sad, Regards, FM

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

I have made several calls to find out about this thing.
No one will talk.
No one will comment
I think this is stinky shit under the bridge and no one will say anything.
Several people fucked up and it is all covered up.
"I don't know nuthin."
Sad, but there it is.
Regards, FM

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

I made another call and was told, " No comment other than a settlement was made."
I have no idea where this kid is, but wonder.
Shit like this stinks.
Is this kid OK or where is he? Why the secrecy.
Something is wrong in Mudvuille.
Regards, FM
PS I would contribute some loot to defend this kid.
I think lawyers have taken care of the problem but wonder if feet have been held to the fire so something like this does not happen again.

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

Kid accidently gets hit in the eye by a Nerf gun and "shooter" goes to juvi? A NERF GUN?

Can't these people just stay int he state (Cali) that they fucked up, not come here and pollute this one.

Sickening state of affairs we're in.

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

+1 for foul mike. I have had several run ins with the cops when i was younger, not because i was doing anything wrong but because i used to shoot BB guns with my neighbors in a near by field and I had a dick of a neighbor who called the cops on us. My father ingrained fire arms safety and responsibility since i was young and so I always made sure that we shot against an appropriate back stop, executed trigger discipline (an unfortunately lost aspect of gun safety in almost all sectors but the military) as well as of course muzzle disclipline. I believe that my neighbor who called the cops decided to leave the "BB" part out of BB guns and told the cops that there were some boys playing with guns in a nearby field (again this is just speculation) but the cop came in with his hand on his gun ready for the worst, as cops should. The second I saw the cop I unloaded my BB gun , set it down, and made sure that my friends did the same. I was sure to address the officer as sir and he soon realized that this was harmless after confirming that they were BB guns and that the environment (backstop and all) was safe for shooting. In fact, he told us that he has no problem with it as long as we were safe and thought that it looked fun and mentioned that he was glad that we were able to get out and do things like this. We need more cops like this. Unfortunately, people fear the police and therefore approach them with a defensive posture which only makes them more suspicious. However, this exchange only left me with more respect and faith for our justice system. im not saying that cops should never get aggressive and im all for officer safety and addressing the situation as they need but If only we could have more officers such as these who dealt with situations more effectively and took oppurtunities to create better public relations, I believe we would have a much more effective system in which the cops were able to work with the citizens (when its realistic to do so) to protect them and uphold the laws.

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

Glad this brought on some interest and for you to find out it is here in Colorado, which must be one of the greatest states in the US as people have moved here from Kali, Tex, Okla, New York, Penn, and every other foreign country I can think of.
Unfortunately, they have destroyed what they moved here in the first place for, and left those of us whose families have been here for generation in the dust.
I am not against ALL who have moved here but it ain't been easy watching the State go to hell.
As I posted before, this case was all over the News early on and then things shut up, "No comment."
I am glad KHOW ran with it and I did not call them yesterday but will check that out as soon as I close.
I do know that the lawyers were on board to take this case and am glad of that.
I am going to the Big City tomorrow to see my grandkids and will ask the neighbor LEO about it.
He is a good guy, like the Cops I wrote about earlier, and I am sure he will answer any questions I ask but may ask me to keep my mouth shut.
I will honor that, as painful as it may be, and at least I will know how this went down.
I hope someone learned something here. Regards, FM
PS Thanks, cooper623

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

I did err!$#&(&
At the start of this post I put in that I did not have all of the facts. Turns out that is true.
I posted, sometime or another, that it was a Nerf gun. That was in error.
It was a "one cock air soft gun."
I believe that is less than lethal and not something that would cause harm or injury to anyone.
It might make a mess as to sweeping up the little plastic balls shot from the guns.
That said,"And please note that I have admitted a mistake."
I hope others can admit to having made a mistake and put this thing to rest.
The local radio stations and numerous lawyers are going on this and going to make fools of the DAs and LEOs involved.
Admit a mistake and don't make kids that have something go wrong afraid to call the cops for help.
Only my thoughts, Regards, FM

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

I have tried to call the News agencies numerous times only to be told that there is"No comment."
This case sucks big time and should not ever been brought out.
I am glad that a local radio station took it on and that the kid now has a lawyer.
Now comes the sad note,
I asked my grandson about how he would handle something that was bad for him, any kind of a situation. He lives in Jefferson county.
The first thing he told me was, "Don't call 911 and don't call the cops."
"Grandpa, that takes you to Juvie and all kinds of hassles."
That was not what I wanted to hear, but I understand.
They are loosing the trust that so many cops have tried to regain. It is sad to see this, but the actions of others rolls down hill.
I did tell my grandson to not be afraid of calling 911 or the cops but do fear that he has a mindset that will prohibit that.
Not good, Regards, FM

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

I figured there had to be more to this story and it took me a while to find a news article because talk radio is full of misinformation.

Two major points that weren't correct are that first it wasn't a Nerf gun, it was an airsoft gun. Second they were not just playing when the accident happened, the boy shot his friend in the eye because the other boy made him mad.

Felony charges are too steep but it wasn't two kids innocently playing with Nerf guns either. I don't know why many talk radio hosts like to make up things to further their point instead of just sticking with facts. Before this even hit the news the DA offered a misdemeanor assault charge plea with record expunged when an adult, it's debatable if that is too harsh. The DA also said they looked at school records and the boy's past history before deciding to file charges.

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

jtie, Thanks. You had better luck than me in following this story up.
As I posted in my first post, I did not have all of the facts.
I did later post that I had found out it was not a Nerf gun but an airsoft gun.
When I first saw this on the News, they were going to be charging this kid with discharge of a firearm, assault and anything else they could dream up, a long list, and the parents of the kid that was shot were on there too saying that this thing had been blown all out of proportion. The News showed the kid's Father taking him in and turning him over to Juvie.
That is why I posted it here on the Hide, to find out what was really going down.
I believe,[and this only my opinion], that the News blows things up and gives out dis-information to get a story and then drops it a day or two later when the next sensational thing comes up and they don't follow through with what they have started but leave you wondering.
I agree that talk radio will go with things too, and not be entirely truthful, but, they did get a lawyer to help this kid.
In the link you provided there is something to the affect that the prosecutors said that, in the past, This would be something taken care of by parents. How true.
I am critical of how this whole thing went down.
Lots of mistakes with unintended consequences.
I was very sad to have talked to my grandson about this and have him tell me, "Don't call 911 or the Cops or you will go to Juvie."
Things like this undo a lot of good effort by the LEOs to gain the trust of young kids.
I don't think these news people even think of that, but it does filter down to the kids, and that destroys all of LEOs good efforts. That really pisses me off. LE has made some real inroads as to gaining the trust of young kids.
I made numerous calls to News agencies trying to find the facts on this and am so tired of hearing, "We have no other information and therefore no comment on that."
Somebody needs to put out a press release and still the rumors.
If you want to know about something, put it on The Hide, someone will step up.
Thanks, Regards, FM

Re: 13 year old Nerf gun shooter

After I spoke to one of my friends, [A Wise Man] I came to the conclusion that there are too many faults here to list.
If anyone of the people involved with this could have done it differently, they probably would do so now.
That said, I do hope that all involved come to some good agreement and there will be lessons learned all around.
It ain't over until the Fat Lady sings, so I will be watching for the end of this.
I don't look good in blue so won't be holding my breath waiting for anyone having admitted a mistake.
I wonder what this is costing the taxpayers of Colorado?
