A friend of mine with a disabled hunters permit for any deer here in Washington State had me load up some cartridges for his 7mm Rem Mag with his choice of bullet. A 140gr Horandy SST on top of some H4350. This little buck was shot out the truck window at 62 yards, I tried to talk him into a Nosler Accubond or a Barnes TTSX but NO! I will stick with the Accubonds and TTSX's.

This is the entrance, note the shot was behind the foreleg. His leg was forward when he was shot.

Totally destroyed the lungs and took the top of the heart off.

The blood shot area on the impact side was huge.

The shoulder was destroyed.

The exit hole was minimal with little damage, I figure just the base made it out, I couldn't even fit the tip of my pinky in the exit hole.

In a perfect world they stand broadside to you and you can put a round through the vital while only wasting some rib meat . In the real world they stand quartering to you and you have to take out a shoulder to get to the vitals and anchor them to that spot . Some meat invariably gets wasted since we can't run them into a cattle chute and club them on the head .

Exactly! I poked at him mercilessly the whole time he was field dressing and skinning it. Then when he asked me to drop the tail gate on the truck. I said, "Why?, we can toss it all in the glove box."

Re: 140gr Hornady SST Vs Little Muley buck.

I USED to run 139SST from my 7mag. Just brutal what they do. I switched to 120 Barnes and 120 Noslers. Results were similar but not quite as bad. Definitely need to run a heavier bullet to avoid meat loss in a 7mag.

120s at 3500 really blows a hole in them! Even at 250 yards.

Re: 140gr Hornady SST Vs Little Muley buck.

I tried HDY .280 139gr SST 'Custom' loads in my M77 and M77V and found them to be very accurate; then plotted the MV and BC and discovered they would likely remain signficantly supersonic out to beyond 1000yd. I'd definitely trust them for anything from Chuck to Buck.

My experience with the 129gr and 140gr 6.5mm SST's in the .260 was mildly disappointing for a match/target bullet, but definitely near top of the pack for hunting accuracy. Definitely MOV (Minute Of Venison).

It's quite possible the disappointment could have been due to impatience with the load development process.

I shoot the 139 SST in my 7RM and they are very accurate and create lots of damage. From my experience, if you shoot a deer in the shoulders with a 162 SST or Amax it will look the same. This applies to most caliber/bullet combinations that generate some speed.

My rule of thumb? If you don't want the damage, don't shoot them in the shoulders, hold a little further back. Also leaves less holes in the cape if you are going to mount it.

If you shoot a frangible bullet at high velocity, you should expect damage.

If you shoot a high velocity bullet, use a controlled expansion bullet (HIB, NAB, TTBBC, TTSX/TSX, GS Custom HV, Northfork, SAF, SII, NP?) and take out the running gear. That is what those bullets were designed to do. You will still have less damage than frangible bullets.

The SST is not a frangible bullet . Here is the one I pulled out of my Deer this year .

This was the 165 grain SST out of my .308 . Quartering shot at roughly 100 yards . Took out the front shoulder first with a bullet on bone hit , then the lungs and deposited itself on the far side up against the hide . We found a few fragments in the shoulder but it mushroomed to .630 inches and retained 76% of its weight .

Yup! Looks just like the 139SST we got out of a WT buck shot at about 90 yds with a 7RM.
